As for your concern about playstyles, you definitely do need to learn and understand the meta. Otherwise you'll just annoy your teammates and be more of a hindrance than an asset.
At the start, you'd do Speed with Solo (jungler takes it), then Mana buff with/for solo. Then you have a choice. You either, sit in lane with solo until the end of the wave/enemy has died (depends on how they are playing), then take elementals (fire giant minions), or you go straight to Mid XP camps. After that, Jungler goes wherever its needed, clearing camps along the way (maybe even stealing enemy ones).
Of course, metas change, so next season this will likely be irrelevant depending on changes they make, and if you're with a team, you might want to try other things, but stick to meta if you're new for learning purposes.
Support doesn't just sit in lane either, they will for a few levels, until the ADC/Hunter can safely clear, then support will start to rotate to other lanes. ADC will puosh thier lane, keeping pressure up there whilst the rest of the team advances elsewhere. Solo will also do this at the start (maybe until first tower is down), then they'll also rotate sometimes (whilst still pushing their own to keep pressure up). Mid is pretty much the same as Solo, but probably more important to be ahead in (again to keep pressure on).
I would say start as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. It was the first mode I played, without prior moba experience, and I managed to find a few people who helped me learn in my first few games. If you can, find a group of people (or even just 1) who are willing to join you in Conquest and show you the meta and basic flow of the mode.
I tried it only to get BM and reported ...
my suggestion start from as early as possible when other players are also still figuering out what the hell they are doing
My suggestion, OP, is if you're really interested in playing Conquest, to find people to play with on regular basis. Especially considering you are a team player kind of person, you'd have exponentially more fun playing with a regular few people, learning from them, building rapport and learning how to fight with each other.
It's an entirely different experience with just a couple friends, you don't even need a full party. Reddit is an excellent resource as well for information, builds, and contacting people who can help you learn Conquest. Like I said, I don't play Conquest much, so can't offer you help there.

By the way, like others said already: Start playing conquest as soon as you can, to get placed with even players.
Check out the pinned beginner's guides thread at the top of the discussions page. Also check out the guides section here on Steam.
Beyond that, you'll want to read up on abilities, items, and builds at places like smite.guru, tiermonster.com, and tentonhammer.com.
Google Smite Tier Lists for information on which gods are considered good at certain roles in different game modes and which ones are not.
Also, watch Twitch streams and YouTube channels like DukeSloth, Raynday, Incon, Weak3n, NShadow, and samdadude for information on how to tie it all together. I find seeing how other people use the abilities of all the gods helps it stick in my head better than just reading it in a Wiki or on the gods section of the game.
Be patient. Learn everything you can because there is a ton to learn. The mute button in Tab is your friend when people are mean. Try to focus on when you have nice and especially helpful teammates and try adding them to your Friends list after the game.
