There are the people that only really know good builds, skill combos and the right behaviour for one or two gods - they instalock because they are afraid of sucking with a ranged DPS and they might end up having to play that if they don't lock down the role and god they CAN play. Unfortunately, teams often tend to not be very forgiving if you're new to being support and aren't up to scratch on hitting that heal ASAP or nailing that silence/push or whatever.
There are the people that got sick and tired of filling in after 10 games where they went support and their tanks/damage dealers didn't perform up to their standards. They instalock because they think you may not be able to be competent with whatever role they locked down.
Then there are the people that just want to play that one guy because they have a lot of fun. They instalock because they don't care what you do, they just wanna throw people around as Hercules.
All of these are bad for teamplay in some way or other, because they completely skip the most important aspect: communication. You'll never know if your team would have been totally fine with you playing that god, and they'll never know that you instalocked that tank because the last (insert number here) tanks let you and the team down.
It just leads to angry people all around because the team is going to be pissed someone instalocked, so each mistake that instalocker makes is going to be scrutinised extra hard. Whoever instalocked will probably then be pissed because it was just a honest mistake, or maybe that unorthodox item pick is actually good and worked for him, but now his entire team is flaming him.
In the end, though, you'll just have to learn to live with it. People will be people.
Every day we stray further from god
Deal with it or uninstall the game for ♥♥♥♥♥ sake.
Where are the "git gud"- guys when you actually need them?
GIT GUD, and this ain't no ranked so CHILL
So instalocking you're just gonna be stuck in a match with some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who decided that he NEEDS to play this hero so bad that he's just gonna lock into it without saying anything. Ignoring his team, and if it's conquest. This makes it even worse because than if someone called that role before you said ♥♥♥♥. You're just giving him the middle finger.
SMITE even in Joust where the matches can be largely extremely short. Is a game where you cannot leave unless you want a pentalty. It's team based since if you're not working together, and the enemy team is even a slight bit doing that. You are ♥♥♥♥♥♥, and unlike sex. It's an unenjoyable experience for both parties.

Unfortunately, sometimes those threads are a tad old. Oldest necro I've seen was 7 years. :D
