Procedure to get Fallout 2 to run perfectly under Windows 7 64-bit.

I posted a procedure in the Fallout forum that fixed all the problems I had with Fallout in order to make it run smoothly under Win 7 64-bit. I found another mod and procedure that also Fixed Fallout 2 to run smoothly under Win 7 64-bit.

One important note is that once this "Fallout 2 Restoration Project" procedure is applied, any old saves won't work any longer, You will have to start a new game. So it's better applied before you start playing.

Here's the procedure:

1. Download "Fallout 2 Restoration Project" (Windows installer) from this location:

2. copy the file to your Steam Fallout folder:

example path: Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Fallout2\

3. Run the file and follow it's installation directions.

4. Start Fallout2 from Steam.

5. Select the "options" screen.

6. Next to the words "Game preferences" at the top left of the options screen there is a button called "Scan". Select it.

7. Change the "Colours" toggle switch to "16-bit" (very important).

8. Set the resolution desired and select "done".

9. Restart Fallout 2 and enjoy. ;)

Fallout 2 Restoration Project is a mod to the original game, however it's very well done and stays faithful to the original story and gameplay (the changes are mainly subtle and for the better).

It's very important you don't apply any other patches or mods other than the Fallout 2 Restoration Project. It has all the proper patches and resolution mods built-in and any other patches or mods will glitch it.

You'll be able to run it from Steam no problems.

Here's my issue. I installed restoration project like you said, and my game is going really really really slow. It says I'm still getting 60 fps, but it's like all the animations are going in slow motion and mouse is laggy, too. The only options I changed were turning on 16 bit colors, switching to DX9 because both of the other options still gave me weird rainbow pixels, and upping the resolution to 800x600. This is extra frustrating because I had it working with a GOG copy a while back, and I can't remember what I did. I'm sad I uninstalled that now.

I have this same problem. It won't let me run the installer. Can you please explain what you did to make it work?

Do I just copy the Fallout 2 directory to C:, run the FRP file, then copy the Fallout 2 directory back into the Steamapps/common folder?

You can just cut/paste the 'Fallout 2' folder into C: or C:/Program Files should work too then run the patch (mine is 2.2), when it asks for the install directory just point it to the 'Fallout 2' folder.
Now you should be able to launch from the folder or Steam (i didn't move it back).

I cut and pasted the Fallout 2 folder to C: and then ran the restoration project. It would let me run the game from Steam so I cut and pasted it back into the steamapps/common directory and now it runs.

So do you HAVE to have FO2 installed on a different drive besides (C:) to install this patch or is there a way around this?

I'm having serious issues with the installer as well. I've tried copying/pasting the Fallout 2 folder to various places and keep getting the same error.

"Fallout 2 appears to have been installed in the C:\Program Files\ directory. Installing in this directory under the version of Windows detected on your system can cause many unexpected problems. Please reinstall the game in a different directory (e.g. C:\Games) and run the Restoration Project installer again."

I even created a C:\Games folder and moved it into that but to no avail. I feel like I'm missing something critical. Can anyone maybe just lay out step-by-step what I need to do to get this to run? Pretty much ready to uninstall everything and start fresh to get this to work.

That's what i had to do i uninstalled and reinstalled on my (D:) drive. Next time i feel the urge to play an ancient unpatched game that hasn't been improved in any way i'm just gonna go DL a torrent cuz this is ridiculous how much time i've had to put into makin this game run right and IMHO valve shouldn't sell games that require you to download a third party's software just to play them.

I agree about not having to install third party software to make a game work, but if you are lookiing to fix the problem I posted a how to in the discussions that should be relatively straight forward to follow.
