Does buying drinks for people in towns do anything?

As the title says, I've tried checking google and the Fallout Wiki but there seems to be no answer? What is the point of buying drinks or rounds at the local bars for everyone? It costs money but doesn't do anything?

roleplay afaik. some will give information and some will even complete quests, but its rare.

Isn't the option to buy everyone a round only available at Klamath, and you can't do that in any other towns? It feels like even developers knew that nobody's really gonna try out this option, so they just didn't bother.

I've found no less than four different bars, even a bar that was literally empty at Gecko where the option to "buy a round for all my friends" was there despite the bar having no NPCS lol.
