One of my favorite Isometric games is Pillars of Eternity 2. Their system is a new take on DnD 5e and its very interesting IMO and one of the best, if not the best cRPG system Ive ever played. Its an Obsidian game also (Creators of New Vegas!).
And pay no attention to Gats, being a fan has nothing to do with bearing dated mechanics.
Fallout 2 specially has a ton of content that was developed half way, clearly needs a restoration patch to be enjoyed and does not have that deep writing as many claim. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE THE GAME, but its not some holy grail. Just watch some videos and play it if you feel like it.
Or, just bite the bullet and start tagging Unarmed instead of Small Guns.
You can be a fan of a line of cologne, but not like certain flankers.
You can be a fan of sports overall but not like certain sports.
You get my point. You can be a fan of something w/o liking everything in the line. So I disagree with you both no matter what you say.
Eventually the game clicked with me and i was breezing through it.
Make sure you get the Car unlocked relatively early. I didnt know about it and almost shelved the entire game.
Even tho fallout has seen many forms, like fo3 being a fps, fallout1-2 are at their core what makes fallout- fallout. It's not just where it all started. It's the very basis of it. I'm not saying that for you to be a rock fan you need to love every rock band, but If you can't get into fo1-2 then you just don't like fallout, I'm sorry you can call me a "gatekeeper" or whatever if that makes you sleep better.
I could say I'm a diablo fan but in reality I only like diablo 2, cuz the more I delved into the lore and later blizzard releases, the more it offed me and d1 is too jank. I'm in no way, shape or form a fan of the franchise and the thing overall as a whole.
I mean, who in the right mind would ask people for their poetry degree before they can be considered "rap fans"
The "joke" about rappers goes something a long the lines of
-"..when a person fails and gives up on poetry, he becomes a rapper" or "when a poet dies, a rapper is born"
Some people like Rage, some people like Hanson Brothers. It's all good. I just wish Bethesda had taken their own ideas in a post apocalyptic wasteland to create a brand new IP and left Fallout to the original creators. There is an immense shift in tone between the two different takes on Fallout, and if you're able to appreciate both, I sort of envy you a little. I genuinely can't.
I think Bethesda does one thing great, and that's Elder Scrolls. I think Morrowind was the pinnacle and I think Oblivion was probably the worst mainline game in the series, but I don't see any ES title as anything other than works of pure love. Bethesda should really stick to Elder Scrolls, it's what they've always done best.
OP, if it's not for you, it's not for you. There's no shame in opting out if you're feeling this frustrated or lacking of any enjoyment or reward. There's plenty of beloved ♥♥♥♥ I can't be bothered to get into, like the Zelda franchise or The Goonies or whatever people like to get weirdly nostalgic about. It's all good.
People just won't give a thing time these days. I feel sorry for people who just don't have the patience any more to even be able to read a real book.
True facts, sadly, but hopefully they will be redeemed. The first game in particular was just pure lightning in a bottle that you could never recreate without the right people in the right place at the right time. A real unique work of art, the spirit of which has inspired so much since.
@Virgil
Under Beth the game series became a parody of itself or its own knock-off. They never really understood the setting or what was built up beneath and behind it so it had a superficial coating only and over time it has become more and more Flanderised.
I'll add that newer games that also have these kind of view angles and lineage are games like Encased, Underrail, Atom RPG for post apoc ideas. Colony ship for sci-fi. Urban Strife or Dead state for zombie survival settings. For a more fantasy style something like Black Geyser or Age of Decadence (with some sneaky setting blending there). There's a lot of options out there. More than I can list.
I couldn't agree more with your entire post, but I have to emphasize that you have a great taste in the genre. I'm a huge fan of Underrail and very fond of ATOM/Trudograd. I enjoyed the myriad roleplaying options in Age of Decadence and though I bought Colony Ship just before it launched, I haven't gotten very far yet. Underrail and ATOM in particular will be staples in my library for quite some time.
I haven't tried the other games on your list, but based on your preferences, I'm now definitely going to check them out. I trust your judgment.
With all due respect, stupid take.
You can be a fan of a franchise without liking everything in said franchise.
How many people love certain entries in Star Wars but hate others?
How many people love certain entries in Star Trek but hate others?
This is the kind of take that is baffling. The OP didn't state that 1 or 2 were bad games. They stated they can't get into the gameplay. Some people aren't cut out of isometric RPG's. That doesn't disqualify or invalidate them from enjoying the Fallout franchise.
They didn't ask for 1 or 2 to be changed. They weren't calling the games trash. They're just expressing their own personal dissatisfaction with themselves for being unable to really get into that style of game. That's it. That in no way invalidates them as being a Fallout fan, get off your condescending high horse.
Everyone likes Fallout for different reasons. The factions, the gameplay's various iterations, the dark humor, etc ad nauseum. None of them are any more valid or true than any of the others.
OP, if the gameplay drags you down, recap the game by watching a lore playthrough. Forcing yourself through something that you aren't vibing with is a quick way to start hating said thing. Don't let yourself get burnt out from it.
