but thx anyway
This is the old school game, you have to look in every crate, pot, box, vase, locker, desk, table, cabinet, bookcase, pile of bones, trash, fridge, some of that will be closed, your option is to lockpick it, that's why this is one of the most important skill. Everybody tags it.
Wait when you get the quests, where the new generation games lead your with some marker what direction to go, no such help here, you have to figure out on your own. Not to mention you have to save before every conversation because very often you get only one chance at certain dialog option, no second chances.
BTW the second door in ToT (Temple of Trials) you have to blow up ;)
edit: still useful to get the lock pick skill to about 50% and find your self a set of lockpicks
1. please speak for your self and not on everyone elses behalf
2. sure, its an old game. doesn't mean heads are gonna blow up due to its lack of quest markers... it's really not that hard to solve the quests.
I tag small guns, science and repair...never bother with lockpick, not when you carry a law.
Ouch, there is very few instances when the high repair and/or science makes a difference, plus you would get pretty high with the skill books as well.
There is a lot of tips and hints how to develop character on the net, of course the best way is your trial and error. But the most recommended starting character to go on first play through is: small guns, picklocks and speech.
Yeh, but what fun is "reccommended". Surely you pick a character which you want to play. I play science boy with good pistols for the gauss pistol.

No, it just wouldn't open for about half an hour. I even reloaded and looked whether i jammed the lock or something and didn't notice. After more than 100 attempts i talked to a buddy who played through the game a couple of times already and he told me to lower the difficulty, since you get a massive boost to your skills.
After that it worked after 2-3 attempts. And that's for a character with 10 Agility and tagged Lockpicking. There is no way to go around, there is no way to boost yourself (aside from the metagame solution of lowering the difficulty), there is no alternate solution. It is just unbelievably poor design right there. I shouldn't be forced to skill something just to get into the game itself. Actually it is worse than that - even when having the almost perfect skills for the task, i still wasn't good enough to open that damn door.
The rest of the game may be a masterpiece crafted by demigods, but this door is just absolutely, completely and utterly nonsensical.
My guess would be that you run into some glitch or something, the only thing is that I played it without restoration patch.
Can you just for giggles make another toon and check if you fail to open the door?
Another toon? don't know what you really mean.
Yupp, tried that, 2 times. First time i simply reskilled because i goofed with the stats and then tried it with one of the standart characters.
To be honest i am kind of disappointed. Got the game from the friend i mentioned before and just looked up the companions. All 14 of them a pretty much horrible. There is like 1 female one and she apparently slept with half of mojave. Seems it is going to be a solo-playthrough.
