Fallout 2

Save corruption
Before you ask yes I use multiple save slots for my play through I used all of them in fact and every time I try to open any of them I get the error message

The instruction at (#) referenced memory at (#)
the memory could not be read from

if I start a new game and create a new save file it works fine but I I've lost about 30 hours of progress and if there is a fix I'd love to know.

I've looked around and seen some people almost ten years ago had this issue but I could not find a discernible cause or fix

even if there isn't a fix I would like to know the cause so I could prevent it in the future

the only mods I had where F2Explorer and Fallout 2 High resolution patch

Corrupted saves are usually caused by saving in mid combat. Don't do that, you'll eventually corrupt your game.

interesting, so If I save mid combat earlier in the game it could end up corrupting my game later on?

Yes. I don't think the simple act of saving in combat will screw you up later, but I think it's the act of loading a save in mid combat that can and will eventually corrupt your game.

So if you're saving mid combat and not loading that save, you should be fine (however there's no point in doing that and it's probably better not to just to be safe).
But loading a mid combat save can eventually corrupt your save later on.

It's not guaranteed but every time you do it, it increases the chances of it happening later on.

It used to happen to me a lot, and ever since I've stopped saving and loading mid combat I've never had a corrupted save in like 10 years
Wrong.
Saves made in combat can easily get corrupted, yes.
But any save file created outside combat is normally perfectly stable, regardless of what happened in the past.

But then that wouldn't explain the op issue (which I had in the past when I did saves in combat) where all of his multiple saves on the same character get corrupted at the same time.

I never did tests to see whether it's the act of saving in combat that can plant that poison pill, or the act of loading that save in combat and then continue playing that save file, saving more times into the future.

I think it's the latter, but it's irrelevant, once I stopped saving and loading in combat, i never had corruption issues, especially the ones where all my save files for the same character corrupted at once. That behavior there tells me that you create a poison pill in that save file that eventually rears its head.
