After the Den is it advisable to go to Redding or New Reno?

Should I just go to Vault City after the Den or bother going to Redding or New Reno?

That's a pretty reasonable path of course.

I will say the "main" quest only requires: Vault 15, Vault 13, Navarro, San Fran, Oil Rig. Everything else is just "leveling/equipping up".

One exception: why Mariposa? I don't think there's anything that guides you there, nor any required items there.

Alright, I just stopped by Redding just to discover it then went to New Reno and got a laser pistol from Salvatore's bar. Afterwards I did the Modoc quest and am going to Vault City

Goris gives you the location and also the hooded man in Navarro.
Lots of good loot and gear (Power Armor, Gauss Pistol, Plasma Rifle, Rocket Launcher there)

The list I made is where you'd reasonably go to follow the main quest clues, and where you get directed/level appropriate for that part of the game.

You can get directed to Mariposa after going to Navarro or vault 13.
