The games are dirt cheap right now (even cheaper on GoG I think) and still a lot of fun. There's a restoration mod out there that adds a lot of new content.
So far I'm enjoying FO2 (6 hours in) but the start of the game is MUCH rougher than FO1 (both in pacing and difficulty).
If you're new to these old games I'd therefore recommend starting with FO1 as you get on your feet a bit faster there.
*SPOILERZ*
Storywise In fo2 you can learn about your ancestor and you can meet a couple of characters and vaults from fo1 to get some perspective on how it all went out or ended up, but that's it.
Playing fo1 second works and is very interesting for the same reasons prequels work too, as you get a look into the past and play the game from the perspective of your ancestor.
As in my previous post: the first few hours of FO2 are much more brutal than FO1. I'm about 10 hours into the second game now and it's getting to the point where I feel competent with my character.
In FO1 you can get there a bit easier.
But it's a bit of a shorter game with more opportunities early on.

If you like game lore, the original 2 Fallout are absolutely packed with it. Much more than the newer ones, at least compared to their size.
