Doofus Bug

I talked to merk and he asked me to kill doofus before doing business with me and I agreed to do so but every time I attack him the game says 'skeeter took x damage' and when he's dead and I try to report it to merk my only option is to tell him that the job's not done so merl won't deal with me at all now. I haven't been able to find any mention of this online and my back up save is several hours back, I'm at a loss for what to do

This may be utterly irrelevant by now but i had the same thing happen. I killed doofus, merk didn't seem to care, but knowing the next quest is to kill three hubologist i did that and it seemed to override the glitch and my conversations with merk progressed normally from there.
