Skynet or energy weapons
So far I've been sticking to small guns and Sulik but I'm hitting the point where I can start thinking about branching out into other options, the main two that interest me are getting gud with laser pistols or getting the cool robot companion. I've never tried either in any of my past run throughs and I'm gonna take Tag! so I can invest points in either Science or Energy Weapons at a decent rate of return. IDK what to get though. What's cooler/funner?

They are both good. Energy/Laser Weapons are the one that brings you the furthest, the other require you to ltake care of your Robot. Skynet is a solid Companion.

Many dont like Companions, but if you like that aspect, go for it. There is another way to have High Science, be sure to boost the skill with books to 91 before you get the last to 130 +, it will be most cost efficient. So i guess: do both, tag Lasers and build up Science manually

Yeah I agree. Using Tag! on science is a waste. As stated previously, you only need 130 science to max Skynet. I wouldn’t waste the Tag! perk. Use it for energy weapons because Fallout 2 has a lot of fun energy weapons.

I'm not sure how I feel about them really, in all of my past playthroughs I avoided them entirely and just solo'd the whole game. Always thought they'd just die super easy and turn the game into an unfun escort mission. Early game Sulik was keeping me alive but now he's like a rabid chiuaua that just nibbles on people's ankles while me and 10 other people are trading burst fire from 10mm SMGs, even the cyberdog and the deathclaw companions have been a tad disappointing.

And all the encounters I've been hitting along the way from 13 to Arroyo were getting them killed like I feared, but 6 fire geckos would have killed me solo so whatever.

Companions are awesome, with a gang of like 5, all decked out in Power Armor and best guns, you can obliterate Horrigan in like 2 turns

Sulik is really good with SMGs tho, just put in charge mode always burst mode with an H&KP90c or a H&KG11e he will do mad damages.
Plus he is tanky and got very good ST for the early game, he is maybe the best follower since you can also buff him with drugs like Jet and Psycho.
He also have like 15 AP and absurdely high Sequence to steal critters turn in his last level so, good to keep that in mind.

I've tried to hand him one but he prefers his default sledgehammer.

Even better. So yeah definitely wouldn’t use Tag! solely for Skynet. In fact, probably best not to tag science at all unless it’s for a roleplay build.

Take his Sledgehammer awy and make him in preferred Range rather than melee in the combat option when you talk to him

its perfectly fine to tag science if your going for 130+ etc for getting skynet. Get it to 91 with books, tag it to raise it up, then lower the points to use in another skill but keeping the 130 you'll need later. Any skill is fine to tag if you have it at a decent level already, some bonus skill points to use on other stuff.

Get science to 91 with books, (raise it to 100 with 9 more skill points) then tag it, and lower it until your 130 science, and the rest of the gathered skill points raise up something else.

Tag is fine if you have a gifted character otherwise you swim in points and miss out on better perks like Better Crits, Bonus Rate of Fire/HtH Attacks or Action Boy

Is that why I'm always scraping by? I don't think I've ever made a non-gifted character. I'm at level 12 or so RN so I can't pick up Bonus RoF yet, nothing really is tempting me at this point.

Tag is a level 12 Perk, at level 12 you have stuff like Living Anatomy, Life Giver, and Action Boy that are much more interesting.
Dont forget that you can keep perks for later too, as an exemple I like to take 2 ranks of Bonus Range damage at level 6 when I do a burst build instead of picking a perk directly at Level 3 like quick pockets or some other sh*t.
Another exemple in your case, is that you can instead of picking a perk at 12, wait to pick both Bonus Rate of Fire and Bonus HtH Attack if you do a sniper and melee run.

If you play with Companions, you need to outfit them good. Sulik is a monster in Power Armour, both with Super Sledge or Ripper, or with the HK burst weapons.

Deathclaw Companion is ok ish when you get him, but as he cannot use armour he will be shredded if you take him to Skynet or the final Battles.

Be sure to learn and master the Combat interface, where you can customize how any Comp acts in Combat, and dont give them weapons that you dont want to see used. If you give sulik a Burst weapon AND he keeps his Sledge, he often switches back to the Hammer instead of reloading. Avoid this by clearing his inventory of Meele options.

In my max Charisma game i had Sulik all the way to the end, and he only used a few stimpacks along the way.
