It depends. It depends on how dominant you wish your character to seem, scraping by or not. I prefer to avoid anything like that until I have lots of higher tier weapons, armor and high skill levels.
But, you can do it carefully maybe without needing to use much health if you use the corners of the building etc. and take advantage of the AI. Also, pick up the .44 magnum from Flick on the west side of town, he'll also have the hunting rifle and shotgun sometimes randomly instead. The .44 will blow their heads clean off.
If you want you can kill him and take his loot, but he is another bartering source. But you can just kill him for his loot, or trade peacefully for his guns.
Also try grenades if you have any, even with a lower throwing skill (usually some of them will get hit anyway if a bunch are in a small area), but pretty sure you find those somewhere later and not in Den yet.
And, never mind, I'm aware about why you wouldn't be able to get into the room, duh my bad.
I usually just pay the 1000 scripts to free him.
But also you don't necessarily need to free Vic right away I guess, you could come back later on anyway after doing other stuff and leveling up elsewhere etc.
Yeah the only way then is probably to kill them all unless you're a female character and have certain traits you can sleep with him or something. Not sure if that makes freeing Vic easier though lol.
Drunk town greeter in Klamath has a molotov cocktail.
Do you have the Dynamite? Blow the door up. Doors are not designed to be opened by a sledgehammer, you may try a Crowbar instead. Any explosive can open the door. Save and try.
You realy need the radio i think, and you are supposed to get it easily. You can of course try to kill them all and see if that makes Vic join up, you are likely to kill them eventually.
There are two rooms, with a door in between. You can lock this door and try then pick on those inside by the windows, and deal with the guards outside first. They all come running when the show starts.
It is a very hard fight for a low level with poor weapons and little ammo, but i did it on my meele playthrough with a Combat knife, so it can be done. Exploiting the stupidity of the AI of Course, and Stimpacking Sulik.
What I usually do is steal the molotov from the bum (dont worry about getting caught, if you run away of the map and then comeback without hurting anybody you will be fine) then blow the door of the brothers's store to get their molotov and loot. And then I blow up Vic's shack.
Anyway, after that you should be good to pay a $1000, but if you don't feel like it... You can, get the guards drunk by using beer on them with that they will have ♥♥♥♥ aim, set explosives on Metzger, lure the Slavers to the friendly gang at the church and kill them with the gang and all your companions their. Since the Slavers have 30 to 40 HP each, it should be an easy battle, the problem is that they have good aim, outnumbers you by a lot and some have Psycho drugs that makes them resistant. If you level up lockpicking, you can also lock the the problematic Slavers away and kill them from a window.
Fallout 2 encourages you to play with the environement based on your character build, so if you think you can't win a battle, try to outplay your foes with the environnement, drugs or your passive skills. If you have tag the sneaking skill, you can also do stealth kills, remember that too. All you have to do a stealth kill, is to kill while sneaking a critter in one turn. The game will then roll based on your sneak skill to see if you're detected.
Have fun !
^This is what I usually do. Most fun I ever had was with a sniper type character. Got my hands on a hunting rifle (Flick sometimes sells them), locked the doors and set up my character as far away from the guards as possible while still being able to have a decent chance of hitting. Using sneak, I initiated combat and started blasting. With a high sneak, the guards couldn't see me and I was free to snipe each other.
Was it cheesy? Meh. Depends on what you consider cheesy I guess. Sneak is seriously underrated in the classic games though since its basically free turns.
The slaver near Vic's room has a psycho you can steal. You can also get some jet around town (not Joey, waaaaay overpriced). Also, steal Metzger's shotty and any spare ammo from him and his goons.
Lock the door to Metzger's room. You shouldn't need to lock the front door, but you can if you want to make it even easier. Just make sure you have a way to get them open in case you get stuck in combat since you can't use LP in combat. A Molotov cocktail will work.
Save, pop your psycho and jet, then go to town on them. With the damage reduction from psycho they won't hit you for more than a couple damage if any (unless they crit). I use the jet for higher damage output since it can be a long battle.
Once the first group is dead, open the door and kill Metzger and the rest. He will be easy with no shotgun.
Don't ever spend the $1,000 to get Vic out. This is the way to go! Just make sure to reload if you get addicted or realize it's a risk if you're an RPG purist.
Make sure to tell Becky you killed him.
so if you've been to Vault City and back you can do it
