assault rifle ammo locations

So I got the assault rifle in Modoc and apart from beelining to the NCR I dont actually know of a reliable way to gain ammunition for it this early. Does anyone here have any ideas on how I can farm some ammo?

This weapon is actually crap. But there are few good gun shops in San Francisco (China Town) and NCR (Bazaar, Downtown).

You may find some 5mm AP ammo in Munitions Manager in Vault City, and Eldridge in New Reno surely has some. If not, here's a simple trick: Stores sell weapons with already loaded ammo, so if a guy is selling an AK-112 or a Minigun, in bartering menu you can offload the ammunition from those guns and buy that instead of the gun. Hope that helps!
