How to make fallout work on a modern pc?
So I'm not well versed with computers and want to play this game, but all old games(fallouts, arcanum etc) just won't work, they crash and lag so bad they're not playable. They used to work fine with my super old pc that I don't have anymore. ideas? help? patches aren't helping either. Remember I'm really not good with computers, like not at all. so help a dummy out.

The version sold by steam runs fine on my Windows 10. If that doesn't work for you, you could try to run the game in Windows XP compatibility mode but then it's not with the "HR" version. I have the original games accompanying me since back when it was sold in stores and I always found a way to make it run on all my Windows versions.

There are also a lot of forums out there where you could find more detailed troubleshooting if you still don't manage.

Thanks so much! I'll try that!

Hope you managed to get it to work. If not, tell and maybe there's something I can help with.

I have a weird crashing issue when trying to load a save game ... it runs fine on my Laptop (Win10 Home, Intel N4100, 8GBRam), but on my main gaming PC (Win10 Pro, i7 7800k, 32GB Ram) it crashes with a Memory Fault Error message when trying to load a save game. XP/win7 Compatibility Mode doesnt work, the game refuses to start, saying i should deactivate it (comp. mode) to run it. :(

Look, I dunno whats happened with my fallout 2, I just got it and my mouse freezes after a second of movement. I tried to close it via steam, but it didn't work. I had to painfully make my mouse go over by pressing the windows button to exit and enter the game over and over. I tried the older version and the same effect happened.

EDIT: With the older version, I can't even close the game, because it doesn't show up! Steam can't do anything about closing it and fallout is stuck 'playing' in my library. I even restarted steam to stop the game from 'running', but it still says that it is running.

Another EDIT: I finally managed to quit fallout 2, but I had to restart my computer.

May be Fallout 2 Restoration project will help. I play it with no problems, the onky problem being savegame breaking sonetines. But I save often, there are many savegame slots in mod

Which version are you playing ?
Do you launch it with with administrator right (it's an opt-in option in any shortcut you make) ?
Did you try the restoration project mod ?

hey guys, thanks for your help! I appreciate it! I found a web page on the steam community that shows different compatibility modes for steam. I used windows 7 for launching the game and so far, no issues!

Download the gog version and it works out of the box. The inferior steam version unfortunately needs a bunch of work arounds

My best guess would be it's a 32 bit game trying to run on a 64 bit OS, unless some work is done on the files, its going to have problems on some setups. Steam does'nt seem to bother, although some other vendors do, ie GOG
