Are companions worth having?
So as all newer games now days sucks, and I failed to find people to play D&D with to make my own games I started to get into the older fallout games. In fallout 1 compainions was just a temporary meatshield and a way to do missions while you yourself wasn't able to hit the board side of a barn. If you kept them around they will eventually die.

In this game I ended up getting Sulik to join me only to have him killed in the first encounter we found. Now I have played the game alone with no companions, got Enclave PA, a car and more money then I can count. Is there any point for me to have any compainons or will they just become meat shields like in Fallout 1?

Yes they are worth having. They offer different skills and can carry items.

Okey but will they stay alive long enough to be worth it? I use my car to carry stuff I don't need. If they die as soon as I find some bandits why should I keep them? Like I am having Marcus right now and he kind of sucks. I just accidentally killed him because he ran right up to a molerat and I can't click on the rat because his hitbox is bigger and cover the enemy's hitbox.

You need to know which weapons they know how to use efficiently and make sure they wear armor. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_2_companions those are list of companions where you can look at their skills and determine how to use them.

Yeah, that will not work. I am not stupid thank you. The problem is that as soon as they get targeted they are dead. If you have a super mutant they will not have any armor since they are to big. If I have to fight all hard parts without them I can just play alone. To me all these companios are Fallout 4 Dogmeat level of garbage.

Nope. Aside from my very first playthrough i never even bothered to carry companions around with me. They always die, block the line of fire, accidently kill bystanders, sometimes they'll kill you, and overall they're just more trouble than they're worth.

I played a medic type of build in Fallout 1(First Aid + Doctor skills and energy weapons for a wep skill) and I'm doing the same in Fallout 2. It's been instrumental in keeping my companions alive. In my Fallout 1 game, I actually kept all 3 companions alive, of course, I didn't take them with me on the final few missions though. I left them in the Boneyard while I went off in my power armor and upgraded plasma rifle, but up until the endgame, they were really helpful, especially after I gave Ian the .223 pistol (he became unstoppable).

Im finding playing a medic somewhat useful in Fallout 2. I imagine Ill be even more useful than in Fallout 1 since there are more companions.

The companions become op as hell. But you gotta level em up. Sulik and Vic start crappy but become the best companions in the game (Vic gets a 195 energy weapons at max level and close to that in repair, you can use him to repair things too).

Marcus never becomes super good like Vic sulik and Cassidy but he starts a little better than most companions

They have as much chance of getting killed outright as you with a massive crit out of nowhere. Just be sure to give them stims or if they run out stim them during combat. Also be sure to set their combat settings appropriatley.

why so hardcore? Reload the game when your NPCs die. I always do that and love keeping all of them around at the same time. Marcus is actually the enemy's shield, gotta order him well.

Sulik has killed me too many times with that sub machinegun for me to trust him with one again. Even when I order him not to shoot it if there's any chance he'll hit me, he blazes away, even if my body is between him and the guy he's shooting at. Hands down he is the worst possible companion there is. I didn't even pay his bail this time.

Cassidy and Vic are the two companions I usually pick. In Vault City I pick up the improved steel armor, and give the two of them that while I take the regular steel. They can both wear it, and it does stop a lot of lead.

If you plan to let Sulik use SMGs, you gotta set his Distance to "Charge!" and Burst to "Always". This way he'll only burst-fire when he's 1-2 tiles away from opponent. Or just let him use .223 Pistol, it uses same sprites as SMGs. Or just let him use Super Sledge and let him go to town.

Sulik is easily one of top 3 companions (alongside Cassidy and Vic, Marcus with Plasma Rifle also makes a great sharpshooter) IF you know how to utilize him properly.

First, playing fallout 2 without restoration project is useless nowadays. Second, there are encounters which are hard to survive without casualties for the whole game, so just load the game in case someone dies. Most of companions level up and get stronger by the time. Using Fallout wiki will easily tell you which companion is good with what weaponry.

Sorry but do I have to point out how abrurd it is when you have to constantly reload the game and use a wiki to know how to do everything? If that is what you have to do all that tells me that companions are useless and not worth having.
Well, have fun spotting 12 raiders who could destroy your companion before you will ever do anything. You can play the game by don't loading no matter what but Enclave patrols are deadly for a long time. Also, using wiki is good but not completely nessesary. You can simply make all your companion use melee weaponry and still manage to beat the game. Wiki is a source of 20 years old knowledge, a treasure trove full of discoveries, tips and advices, you don't need to use it at all.

Sorry but are you being a b!tch or something? If I want to use the wiki 100% I am not playing the game. If that is what is needed to keep them alive the difference between not using any comapinions, having compainions without using the wiki and playing the game using the wiki is that I will be alone regardless or I will have someone over my shoulders telling me what to do. As I said. When I picked up my first compainion I fought 3 robbers when I took 5 steps outside of the Den. He was in a 1v1 fight and got killed, in the first combat encounter we had. If I just have to reload because I have to run away regardless I do not want to play the game because it waste my time. I stopped playing Fallout 4 because it wasted my time.

I don't give a sh!t if the wiki is 20 years of knowledge, it isn't an argument. If I wanted to play a game where I know everything there is to know about a game I just go and replay Skyrim or Dark Souls or something like it. Heck I might just go back to my old PS2 games. There is no fun to be had when you know all options. If I want to play D&D and play a campaign I myself made as DM I will not have fun as I literally wrote all encounters.

You are very good in cementing that compainions are useless. Unless you do X, Y and Z and follow the wiki you can't keep them alive. In Fallout 1 Ian was at least able to kill things and stay alive until he became useless, but then you was strong enough to survive alone.
