Rainbow pixels all over my screen
So i bought the collection nd when I booted up the game for the first time and the first thing I saw was a pixelated mess of rainbow colours splashed all over my screen I dont know if this is in any of the other fallout games yet and its not in any of my steam games either. I know theres patches (although i dont know what that is) and stuff but i have the intelligence of a fish when it comes to moding im clueless and confused and just wasted 20 bucks. can someone please instruct me on how to fix this

You have not wasted 20 bucks! I have had this issue before and it is fixable. It has to do with the color settings.

You should be able to modify the settings from within the game OR install the Fallout High Resolution mod which allows you to modify these settings from the main menu you get when you first start the game. I would recomend installing this mod if you have a widescreen monitor anyways. Unfortunately installing this mod is a tiny bit finnicky with the Steam version of Fallout, but it is still very doable.

I hope that helps.
Thanks man but I have 1 question about the procces you linked me on step 3: I have no idea how to find this folder I dont know where it is

Google GoG and buy it there. Or install "killaps" something like that. unoffical fallout 2 patch. google it.

Or what you could do is run the command prompt, boot your game, alt tab out and type into command prompt /taskkill explorer then when you're done with the game, type /run explorer
lol what????

and im not buying anything to fix my game in my opinion I think its kinda sad that a developer would release a game with such a problem and expect you to mod in order to play

I have found a solution without the need for mods.

first go into the Steam files:
  • (Right click steam shortcut -> properties -> Open file location)
  • open steamapps -> common -> fallout,
  • then right click 'falloutw', then click properties,
  • then click the compatibility tab,
  • then click the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and then select windows XP service pack 3.

one problem is that it will always ask for confirmation when starting the game

I've tried operating the game in "Compatiblity Mode" before, but it has *never* worked for me (ever). For anyone else still having this problem, the only thing that I've tried that's worked are the patches (thanks CapnLilNemo).

However, I am intrigued by Pinky Pylon's method. I didn't try it before I installed the patch files, though I think I might do it next time (if I have to install it on another computer) just to see if it will work. If anyone has tried it, could you let me know how it worked for you?

Hello there,

I have followed all the instructions for Fallout 1 (bought the pack). Extracted both rars to the fallout folder directly and then installed the high res patch. I am also running the game in comp mode with 256 col, etc.

This all works fine but as soon as I chose 16bit or 32 bit colours and restart the game the screen goes black. I can hear the music and I have tried alt+tab, but I either get half a screen or a full screen, but always a frozen mouse.

I am at my wits end, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game and the patches several times and the game will always run without the patches, but as soon as I turn the res. up it freezes.

I really want to play the game...

I am playing with a windows 7 64-bit version and pretty up to date Nvidia grphics card. Even tried running it with the integrated version and the Nvidia card, but to no avail.
I feel your pain I tried to install the patch but i failed HORRIBLY I hate this so much no only have i COMPLETELY wasted 20$ but I also could have bought so many other things. I think its unbelievably stupid that a developer would have to rely on mod for people to play their game. On a side note I got the game to work once but then the screen turned black and anywhere my mouse went uncovered the blackness it coninuously happened and i am omega angry
