I think I messed something up (Killian Darkwater quest)

Alright, I'm not sure how likely I am to get help with this but I figured no harm in asking. So I'm playing the game for the first time and I just visited Killian in Junktown. A guy comes in to kill him but I dont attack (didn't know if it would aggro the guards or not), however my companions do successfully manage to kill the attacker before he can kill Killian.

Now my problem is it seems that in not directly killing the attacker I can't get the quest from Killian to investiage Gizmo... which apparently also means I cant recruit Tycho. Is there any fix for this? A command line or config file I can edit somewhere? :/

Not as far as i know, you just have to reload a save and kill the red coated guy yourself, just make sure not to shoot anyone else than him, that way nobody will aggro you.

I'm pretty sure the reason why you didn't get the quest is becouse killing the assailant triggers the quest, once your party members did it for you it didn't activate.

Just a thought though.
