Need help: Resolution+Screen Settings in Fallout 1in2 from Et Tu (and some other questions)
Okay so I installed Fallout 1 + 2, downloaded and unpacked Et Tu.

It's my first time ever using mods or playing FO1 (FO2 is my fav game of all time and I've beaten many times).

Questions

1. What should choose here?[imgur.com] (comes up each time I launch)
2. Where to set everything (i.e. quality of life stuff, graphics etc.) - is that all in settings/preferences menus?
3. What resolution+screen settings[imgur.com] to use? (I have a 1920x1080 default resolution on my laptop plugged into This Monitor[www.amazon.com]

Please advise - thank you !

EDIT: I noticed it doesn't even give me a screen settings menu anymore when I click options - only game preferences (I think it's after I clicked 'yes' on the thing in my link in #1), wtf? And also, tried a new game, menus are tiny and this is how game looks.[imgur.com]

1. I don't remember that one, probably clicked Yes.
2. Inside game folder, for me it's G:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout 2\Fallout1in2\config - open fo1_settings.ini and tweak to your liking. I also recommend reading the README inside Fallout1in2.
3. It's unadvisable to set resolution to the same as your screen, reduce it by 2-3 steps so that UI is not as terribly tiny like in your last screenshot. I usually play on 1366x768 or 1280x720 on my 1080p 24inch monitor.

You can probably set screen settings with f2_res.ini inside Fallout1in2 if you can't change them in-game.

What settings would you recommend for me to get the most classic but fun FO1 playthrough (never played it before), but also best Quality of life settings?

I've played and beaten FO2 a bunch of times back in the day.

I looked at my fo1_settings.ini and I pretty much activated everything that said (Fo2-style), and most other things that don't feel OP. I don't think that even activating everything would be too silly, the selection of tweaks and mods in there is pretty well thought out.
With these mods it should feel like FO2, gameplay-wise.

Just went through the whole file - here's my thoughts:

  1. What is expanded ending slides?

  2. Did a motorcycle exist in game or was this an addition? Does it take away to have it for first playthrough?

  3. Merchant restock doesn't sound bad, and party limitation is alright - I dont like a large party anyway.

  4. I'd probably disable fo2 critters (why have them in fo1)

  5. Mr handy, eyebot - extra npcs that weren't in fo1?

  6. Doors closing/opening automatically - why does it matter?

  7. Destroying critters worn armor...seems legit, don't remember picking up armor from dead in fo2

  8. upgrading more than one power Armor - is that OP?

  9. Don't know what this disguise system is, or vault 13 armor, or dogmeat.

  10. Upgrading weapons - don't remember if I did that in fo2.

  11. No idea what Khan armor is.

  12. What's the deal with item rewards from Talus and Mathia a BOS? And why/why not is there this Shady Sands merchant option?

  13. Not gonna enable cut characters - whats point.

  14. Sun going down earlier in winter sounds cool, although I usually rest until light out as i don't like dark, so maybe should disable.

  15. Tougher mutants at end sounds cool. Tougher humans mid-game - why not just up game difficulty?

  16. Time limit stuff - I really don't want to lose the game if I don't finish in time and have to start over, so not sure if disable time limit or not.... also not sure if to change mutant invasions...(?)

Fixt stuff seems easier

Probably enable CHA boost, intimate relations lol

I've also heard there's a couple of other mods ppl usually download, but are they necessary really for fun/quality of life, or is this et tu stuff enough to enjoy without annoyances and have classic feel of the game first time?

(Mix of comments/questions here - plz let me know if you have any answers/advice on these)

After this I can finally play game and not bother you guys lol - ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ocd is a pain in my and everyone else's ass i think.

1. Iirc it's just some additional slides to give more details for smaller places/characters - nice addition.
2. No, vanilla game doesn't have vehicles. I think I activated that on last playthrough and never ended up using. Game is just not that big to need it too much.
3. Yes, same.
4. I have them on, but maybe you're right. I just played a lot of FO1 and FO2, plus Fallout Nevada (FO2 sized mod), so the critters kinda got mixed in my head.
5. They were there, just not for hire.
6. I think it's just an immersion/QoL thing (or maybe to be the same as FO2?).
7. Yeah, that would be too unbalanced for economy.
8. I don't think so. Maybe if this mod allows followers to wear it (I don't remember).
9. I think the armor is something like the starter armor from the vault in FO3, probably same as leather armor. Haven't tried disguise. Dogmeat is a dog follower, this just makes him different color.
10. Me too.
11. Also some flavour item probably, Khans are a raider tribe/faction.
12. I think BOS rewards are just some more money, don't remeber the items (nothing OP). I think there was no proper merchant in Shady Sands, this probably fixes that.
13. I have this disabled, but will try it next time.
15. I have mutants set to 1, so some challenge, but nothing crazy.
16. I forgot to disable Necropolis invasion, it is too fast, 500 for Vault 13 is hard to fail. Others I left disabled.

I played FiXT at first, had some unpleasant crashes, corrupted saves. That mod has not been updated since 2014 (last time I looked). Et Tu feels better IMO.

Thank you for all that!

I guess I'll do

- a play on "Normal" game and combat difficulty (I did fo2 like that afaik).

- And these Configuration settings:

On
  • - Expanding ending slides
  • - Restocking merchants
  • - limit on party
  • - auto door opening/closing
  • - ability to disguise companions
  • - upgrading weapons (cause ♥♥♥♥ it)
  • - alternative Khan armor styles (cause ♥♥♥♥ it)
  • - Shady Sands merchant (likely nothing big)
  • - later game mutants toughness 1
  • - Water chip time limit - I think I read that the timer for water chip is displayed and gives a generous amount of time, plus can be extended and it's not the game-winning quest, so I think I'll leave it on 150 days.

Off
  • - fo2 critters
  • - bot and eye companions
  • - armor loot from enemies
  • - dogmeat colors
  • - characters who were cut
  • - motorcycle - Ive seen others say that game isn't big enough for it to be necessary esp. on 1st time. I think I'll disable.

Not sure
  • - Doors - does closing doors help in combat - i.e. they can't shoot through it, easier to funnel enemies?
  • - Powerarmor - if I turn on ability for more than 1 set to be in game, can companions wear it then? maybe op...
  • - Worldmap Fo2-style worldmap interface - not sure if on or off better...
  • - Tougher Humans "to make the mid-game more of a challenge" - 0, 1, or more - not sure...
  • - The Glow "radiation effects in the zones around the Glow" - not sure...
  • - Invasion time limits - should I turn off all invasions? (I've read that the ones besides necropolis and vault 13 are kinda senseless, and in general if u take long messing around in the world, you get a bad ending without warning etc.)

    BTW, Forgot to Ask:
    1. 1. What is Target highlight On vs Targeting Only?
    2. 2. Item highlight On - is that always on or enables hotkey to highlight?
    3. 3. Any recommendation on audio/brightness levels[imgur.com]? (accidentally reset to default whatever Et Tu had on there)
    4. 4. It's kind of annoying, when I move arrow down to my HUD (i.e. selecting gun etc.), often accidentally move too far down and push screen down - anyway to make that more convenient?

Iirc doors stay open in combat anyways, so probably not important.
Worldmap looks nicer in FO2, so I enable this.

I don't have "tougher humans" in my settings, it's probably something new added since I last played. But I don't remeber them being that easy on normal.

Glow radiation is more of an immersion thing - adding rads when traveling through squares near the location.

I think it's ok to turn off all invasions.

1. Not sure what targeting only means.
2. Not sure either, I think it's easy to check by changing settings, the highlight key was either Shift or Alt (can check in-game with help - F1 key).
3. I left it at default.
4. I don't think I've seen a setting for disabling edge panning, so probably no.

You are the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ best my friend!

So after adding ur response to my consideration, in addition to the ons/off I mentioned, I've decided:

ON/OFF:
  • Doors ON
  • More than 1 upgraded ower Armor OFF
  • FO2 style world map ON
  • Tougher humans (will just keep as intended) OFF
  • The glow [would be really cool to explore a bombsite, but I guess I could always take Radaway - so will keep on for immersion I guess (hopefully have Power Armor by that time for resistance)]. ON

Settings:
  • Changed a line in a file to let me use <shift> for highlighting of items, corpses, containers etc.
  • Combat speed higher (maybe max, will play w. it)
  • Always run
  • Audio/brightness will play around w/ it.

I'll also use hotkeys in combat to change weapon/function, access inventory, whatever else possible to prevent constantly moving screen down accidentally.

The only thing I'm a little torn whether to keep just the Necropolis invasion on or turn it off... Apparently if it's on, even if you do get there in time and help out the town in whatever way, if you return later, it triggers that it was invaded... so basically I have to get there early and never come back again. Not sure how I feel about that. Also, feel like trying to optimize everything I'm just spoiling stuff for myself like a dummy lol. Once I decide on this toggle, everything else I've already adjusted and will start playing - no more research lool.

I did also read about what kind of char is most smooth/fun playthrough. Seems like Tagging Small guns, Speech, Lockpick. I believe most recommendations were:

  • ST: at least 5 (or 6) so can use all guns
  • PE: 6+
  • EN: 4+
  • CH: 2-3 (dump stat, apparently almost useless in FO)
  • IN: 7+
  • AG: 8+
  • LU: 6 (or 7?)+

I think I would say that turning Necropolis invasion off is a better option, because it makes completing quests for the people living there more meaningful. Otherwise it was kinda for nothing if they get invaded and killed. Though it's can be agrued both ways, considering the much darker overall atmosphere of FO1 compared to 2.

As for optimal character, it looks alright to me.

Both good points - so is it like even if you come and help them and do the missions, but step into town even 1x more, they'll get invaded?
ZumZoom Aug 17, 2023 @ 12:14pm
I think so, it's been a while. Iirc not much changes, NPC's are killed and there is an extra squad of supermutants present.
