The previous version (with the unofficial high resolution patch) worked fine in windowed mode, but I don't know if it's still working after the last update.

Just because you can't get the game to work doesn't mean it's broken for everybody. Don't take your rage out on a good game that a countless number of people enjoy. It's a very old game, of course there might be some issues trying to get it to work on a new machine. You should have known what you were signing up for.

Villian, didn't you post in another thread that it's now working for you? Can you post what fixed Fallout for you? It might be helpful for others. By the way, congrats and enjoy!

To be honest i have no clue what really fixed it.

But what i found was my game only worked whn i played the old original version then i downlaod the high res patch and the other patch that goes with it and then none worked.
I tried deleting things etc but then when i went into the fallout directy and went into fallout config
and set it to windowed mode it worked but it was zoomed really far out then i started messing with it and it finally worked.

Hello fellow vault dwellers,

I cannot use the windowed mode. Am I missing something? I tried the sfall1 mod and d3dwindower before realizing there is a windowed mode toggle right in the game settings included with the steam version.

Seems like there is an intent on either the high resolution mod creator's or Bethesda's part to allow the game to be run in windowed mode. Any help is appreciated.

Change the INI's directly if you want to used windowed mode.

Funnily enough I was having problems getting it to run in the first place and that's what solved it, though I wasn't content and got it to fullscreen.

Should be in the "f1_res.ini" in your steam files.

Thank you! Do you by chance have a link to instructions or can you post them here?

Honestly I tinkered with them myself. But if you want an easy way I can sort of type them.

Go onto your steam library page.
Right click on the original fallout
Go to properties.
Go to local files
Click browse local files.
In the file explorer, you should see a file called "f1_res.ini". Double click that, if it askes you to choose a program to open with, choose notepad.
Scroll down and find "WINDOWED=0"
Change that to "WINDOWED=1"
Enjoy

I found windowed to be too small for my tastes but you may find differently.

No problem :)

NOTICE: Playing on Win Vista + Win 7/8/10 to toggle fullscreen may require to change a different ini located in your appdata of your user profile.
For example: To change the UAC Aware High-Res Patch:

Go to C:\users\<replace_with_your_user_folder>\AppData\Roaming\Fallout
There should be another f1_res.ini
Was made aware of this after reading more in the other INI file.
