Right now they still seem to be in trouble, especially since Bethesda sued them over the project for a Fallout Online game (Project V13). Also Interplay mainly published Fallout, Black Isle Studios is the original dev team.

…Here one can see they're making a reboot of ClayFighter, was it nice to see the talking heads in FO1+2 made of clay![interplay.com]

I've heard most of the original staff went on to Obsidian, who were behind New Vegas and more recently Pillars of Eternity. That said I've been unable to verify this myself.

Yes, some of the original devs are at Obsidian while some are working at different game companies. Tim Cain and Feargus Urquhart (Obsidian CEO) are there now along with Josh Sawyer who worked on the original Fallout 3 project Van Buren.

Brian Fargo who was the driving force behind Fallout's development, along with Matt Findley and a few others left Interplay in 2002 and shortly after set up inXile Entertainment. They are now working on Wasteland 2 (Wasteland 1 was the spiritual predecessor to the Fallout series) and Torment: Tides of Numenera ("sequel-ish" to Planescape: Torment).

After Black Isle was shut down, many key people like Feargus Urquhart and Chris Avellone formed the core of the newly established Obsidian Entertainment and developed Fallout: New Vegas, as well as many other IPs across many different publishers.

Apparently, Obsidian and inXile formed a "friendship agreement" that allows them to share the technology and resources with each other (for example, many of the Obsidian staff helped out with the development of Wasteland 2).

Only a couple of guys were drafted back into the reformed Black Isle studios, which is working on the Project V13 (previously Fallout Online, before Bethesda Softworks sued Interplay over the Fallout IP).

The rest of the laid-off Black Isle staff moved on to other studios or simply left the industry altogether.
