Fallout 1 Co-Op Mod Idea: Bringing Vault Dwellers Together
Hey everyone,

I've been thinking about how awesome it would be to experience the classic Fallout 1 story with a friend. What if there was a mod that enabled full co-op gameplay, allowing two players to explore the wasteland, make decisions together, and tackle the main storyline as a team?

Here's how I envision it:

Shared Story Progression: Both players can work on quests and make choices, with dialogue options decided by a vote or the hosting player.

Customizable Characters: Each player creates their own character with unique SPECIAL stats and perks.

Combat Mechanics: Turn-based combat could alternate between players or allow simultaneous actions, depending on balance.

Loot Sharing: A simple system to trade and split loot fairly.

Roleplay Elements: Players could roleplay different approaches to situations—one might be the talker, and the other the fighter.

I feel this mod could breathe new life into Fallout 1 for fans and newcomers alike. Anyone else think this could work? I'd love to hear your thoughts, and if there are any modders here, is something like this even possible within the Fallout 1 engine? PLEASE PLEEEAASSSEE MAKE THIS COME TRUE. I hate Fonline dont get me started, Atleast do you happen to know about a Mod that allows you to controll more that one character so my friend could controll an NPC. Thanks! :P

This will never happen. The game didn't have an engine, and that invariably means that graphics code is embedded everywhere. It wouldn't be economically feasible since the developers would need to go through the entire code base and make updates to fully remaster the game.

Furthermore, co-op needs infrastructure. A non-co-op game made with Unreal or Unity would have that kind of infrastructure, but a game that hasn't been abstracted with an engine wouldn't have any kind of infrastructure to implement co-op. They couldn't even do it with a mod, since there's no plugin or API system to hook into.

And, lastly, the owners of the IP have stated on record they don't think co-op or remastering would improve the game. They _want_ people to play it the way it was released.

Pretty sure that we will never see Fallout remastered or with co-op.

The ONE HOPE would be for someone to recreate the game using a modern engine, but that would be an ENORMOUS effort and years of work.

So you're saying there is a chance :D

It'd be easier to just make a similar game from scratch, in practically any other engine. It might even be easier to create an engine and then make a game in it using whatever assets you can pilfer. Even so, I'm sure you'd run into copyright issues at some point.

You can always try the FOnline instead, I suppose. https://www.fonline-reloaded.net/ Personally, I'd look for mods of other games to scratch the mp fallout itch instead, but good luck with whatever direction you decide to go.
