Unable to take items out of bag/backpack

I read somewhere that to take items out of bag/backpack, you "use" it as if you used a stimpack, which replaces the character icon with the back icon and shows it's contents. And at that point, you can drag an item to the right where the character icon used to be and it will move it back to the original inventory. My issue is, when I try to drag an item over the icon, nothing happens...

Has anyone else experienced this or found a fix?

How about dropping the bag or backpack on the ground, then using your Steal skill on it?
