don't understand why fallout 1 and 2's gameplay is deemed outdated
I was expecting a lot worse when starting fallout 1. but apparently outdated gameplay to people just means turn based combat. The mechanics are basically a mix of project zomboid and civilization. So i'm a little confused on why it's difficult for people to adjust to.

May seem that way to players used to shooty stuff like latest games.

Because zoomers and normies cant withstand turn based game and their attention span cant work

As already said, attention span of latest generations has decreased a lot, so this game, being a classic RPG, is not exactly their cup of tea. They want fast action and not thinking too much, while this game needs strategic and tactic thinking both during the combat and when dealing with character building and game missions.

Well, there’s no way you could look at this game and think it was developed this year. It looks and plays absolutely like a video game from the late 90’s.

And there’s no in-game tutorial… you really have to read the instruction manual for this one, otherwise you probably wouldn’t have a clue what to do.

So, that’s what people mean.

Its an unforgiving old school crpg. Very easy to lock yourself out of stuff and even ruin a whole run depending on save files. Also its a struggle to play this game on 4k since you can't zoom in.

I think the old-fashioned UI design is what dates the game most of all; lots of super tiny buttons to click on, many of which are not labelled, not even with a hover popup.

I'm a zoomer and I didn't really have that many problems, most mechanics are pretty self-explanatory. Even if you don't fully understand something you'll learn by doing. Definitely prefer having no tutorial over having to replay a tutorial every time you start a new game.

Because UI is esoteric for new players or those who are not familiar with cRPGs.

I mean they probably just didn't play Baldur's Gate 3 yet.

The UI is very wonky by today's standards. Only the red buttons are clickable (when there's a whole giant word that should work), things are in arbitrary places, you have to change "modes" to do something as simple as talking to someone, things get sorted to the end of your inventory (including bombs you've just started the timer for), picking the same dialogue option yields different results based on Speech but the game doesn't tell you there was a check so you wouldn't know there was one, you have to Steal back from your companions because there's no inventory swap, you need a perk to get a different color on friendlies VS enemies and are stuck examining them one by one instead, some quests are marked in the log and some aren't, there's no button to highlight items on the ground, the looting interface has tons of free space but refuses to tell you the weight of items in your inventory and whatever you're looting, etc.

And then there are major balance issues. Companions don't level up and can't be given better armor so they automatically die in the late game, you can die randomly in a single enemy crit, that kind of thing.

Even Arcanum, which is basically Fallout except a million times better, is still somewhat wonky in that regard.

We have high tolerance for that kind of nonsense because we've been playing these games for three decades, but that doesn't mean it's all fine. The game's got massive flaws and we have to recognize that.

This is right here... is hot takes. I tempted to agree because Arcanum has better RPG system with plenty of backgrounds that would support that roleplaying. Charisma is non-dumpable because it's actually matters for NPC reactions.

Hmmm..... yes, Arcanum > Fallout.
I wouldn't say the turn-based combat is the "outdated" part. Technically its all outdated.

I feel like what people mean is the user interface (menus and whatnot) are outdated. And by outdated they mean non-intuitive, so its harder to immerse yourself into (at least until you learn how the UI works)

If only the world of Arcanum felt half as interesting as Fallout.

Eh, that's too subjective too judge.

Class/Race based RPG is still more robust roleplaying experience compared to classless system where the roleplaying happens mostly in player's head.
