Recommended character build?
I haven't played the original game in around twenty years, but I recall every non-combat skill aside from Speech being pretty much useless. So I'm thinking of taking the Gifted trait, bringing Agility up to eight or nine, give Luck and Strength a boost as well, and tagging Small Guns, Melee, and Speech.

What do you think?

Agility maxed at a minimum. Otherwise you're just screwing yourself out of action points in combat.
speech is good for some stuff and small guns can/will carry you the whole way if you want it to.
Avoid big guns if its been a while since you wont see one for a long time.
Charisma, unlike 2, doesnt determine your companion limit, so lots of folks use it as a dump.

I generally go unarmed, speech, and repair myself.

Agility at 10 is mandatory. Higher perception, makes for more ranged attacks. I've never done a high luck character, but I hear you can 1 hit crit, most enemies.

10 in endurance gives you major HP, once you start gaining levels. Never take strength below 5, and dump all your charisma points. Remember, your speech options are determined by your intelligence.

Never tag Small guns, repair or science, they can all be upgraded with books, and you will have sooo much loot, your going to need to trade it for something.

I would tag Energy Weapons or Big Guns, (the flamer is NASTY), and always tag lockpick. ALWAYS!

Mod the game with Fallout Fixt or Fallout 1n2, you can control companions, and they even gave me a flamer, when I tagged Big Guns.

Gifted should always be your number one trait to pick. Then choose either night person, fast shot, or small frame, or finesse if your going for a high luck.

Save your perks for higher levels, and always save some skill points, in case your stuck somewhere.
