I had already beaten you both to it though, and can confirm that it is not bad.
The steamdeck defaulted to a community button layout that was a little wacky (though with a little tinkering it was much better).
The config made the right trackpad the mouse control, which because the game doesnt have proper controller support you will be doing a LOT of heavy lifting with that thumb (mine got a little sore from the work it was doing).
You will find that menu navigation not only requires use of the trackpad, but the few shortcuts you DO have can be very inconsistent. Backing out of menus (inventory, pipboy, character screen, pause menu) without clicking on the onscreen "Done" button wont consistently use the same button on the steamdeck.
lastly i HIGHLY recommend that the "2X scaling" option in the main menu's options be turned ON. Trying to highlight and select objects and items on the ground using the trackpad at high resolutions on a small, portable screen is an exercise in frustration, so turn that option on, youll see less of the world all at once but it makes seeing details a lot easier
Edit: Whoops, just remembered i actually ended up playing fallout 2, and this is the fallout 1 forums, i dont know how much of what i said is applicable to fallout 1 as i still havent checked it out on the steam deck
