Stuck in Military Base Prison Cells
I'm trying to figure out if I'm stuck or just impatient.

First time playing.

I was in Necropolis, spoke to some Super Mutants, was taken to the Military Base, interrogated, then thrown into a prison cell. I lock picked my way out of the door, killed the two Super Mutant guards...and now I seem to be stuck.

To the north and south are yellow force fields. I read online to use the Repair skill on the force field emitters, but I'm just getting the message that I've failed to do anything with them. My character is combat focused, so I've read that it may take many tries to deactivate the force fields with my low Repair skill (29), but I've attempted it at least a couple dozen times to no avail. Do I keep trying? Or am I stuck?

You're pretty much ♥♥♥♥♥♥, if you are captured. Unless you have the means to escape (Combination of sneak, repair and lockpick or explosives to destroy the yellow force feilds) however, if you manage to kill the two mutants outside of your cell then you should be more than capable to deal with the ones in Necropolis.

What I like to do as a combat character with enough luck and money (Combat armor + Plasma Nades + Powerfists/.233 Pistol/Plasma Rifle) is to intentionally be captured, kill the Lieutenant, and destroy the base normally. You'll have a very cool and badass dialogue line if you come back to Harry the Mutant, the one who captured you in the first place.

Can you elaborate on this? How do I know if I have the means to escape? I'm looking for options that don't require a restart. The game took all my items away, so I'm down to what was on the corpse in the cell, and the two Super Mutants I killed, so that's a pistol, a laser rifle, some ammo, a flower, and some stimpacks.

Keep using the repair skill on the south one until you succeed go down the elevator you’ll be on the final floor. In the room with 3 mutants there will be some explosives that you can blow up 2 emitters so you don’t have to keep using repair on. You can then either go fight lou for your stuff back or just go into the control room and kill some of the techies for the control card to the computer.
Set the base to self destruct using the second from the bottom. It should set the base to explode and disable all yellow force fields.

Thanks for the detailed response. Any idea how long it’s supposed to take to deactivate the south force field? Seems like it’s taking a really long time, as I’ve attempted it at least a couple dozen times. Also I was mistaken earlier, my Repair skill is only 17. My Science is 29.

Probally quite a while with that low of repair you might have something like a 5% chance so you'll fail 95/100 times.

What is your game difficulty setting on? If you turn it to easy mode it'll bump you up 20% in all non-combat skills, you could then just turn up the difficulty again once you get past the shield.

I'm playing on Medium right now. I'll probably experiment with turning the difficulty down next time I play. I spent another hour straight yesterday spamming Repair with no luck. It sure feels less than 5% success at this point.

You can turn difficulty any time you want.
Try not go to the prison if you have save file before you go. Its almost impossible to get out from military base with low level character.

Really the only thing that held me up was the force field emitters. Switching the difficulty to Easy seemed to work, as it only took me about 5 tries to disable the fields, while on Medium I failed several dozen attempts. Getting ganked by 5 Super Mutants on the bottom floor sucked too, but I always appreciate a challenge.
