Tycho only uses a spear even though he can use other weapons? (It was a broken arm)

I ended up getting tycho as a ally to help out as a sniper because it seems he is the only one capable of using a Sniper rifle. I took away his shotgun and gave him a sniper rifle, told him to switch to his best weapon to make sure he would use it, however he chose not to use it and instead used his fists only. After messing around, I went ahead and gave him several weapons with ammo that should fit his available animations (As that is appearently a thing) and even his own shotgun back yet, he choses to use his fist. The only weapon he willingly uses is his spear. Was it a mistake to tell him to switch to his best weapon which I would have hoped have been the sniper rifle he had at the time I told him to?

EDIT: While doing the Military base segment, He randomly switched on his brain and equipped the combat shotgun at least, then died to a missile immeadiately afterwards but I was able to load and he kept equipping every time I had to load. At the mother deathclaw in Boneyard, he reverted back to fist but telling him to use best weapon fixed it right again.
The Fix? I have no clue. it just sorta fixed itself, least when I started to need it most.

EDIT:
MY SOLUTION: ExDuelist Reminded me about broken arm mechanics and I realized that I had used First aid skill on him to save stimpaks, found the broken arm and ended up healing his crippled limb which fixed the problem.

You must also give him the right ammo. The Sniper rifle uses FMJ. If the weapon is empty, Tycho will switch to another weapon, such as the spear.
Otherwise, I don't know why he'd do that. Tycho also has a strange behavior sometimes.

Does he require FMJ to use it? Its possible if he requires a certain ammo I could be giving him the wrong type. Course He ideally would use his shotgun regardless with the sitation as he had ammo for it. Oh well. I have given up on him and has chosen to given him a spear. He will at least still help deliver a little bit of damage. Even if it is far from optimal and endangering his own health. Thank you for attemping to answer.

Companions don't need to exactly carry the ammo, it's fine as long as their gun is loaded.

usually when an ally stops using fire weapons is definitely telling you that his arm got injured, fix his arm and will be fine.

Thank you, I just realized I had used first aid and found out his arm but didnt think about it because I was used to later fallout logic.

Lel, First aid only deals with small injuries. Doctoring is required for heavy... doctoring.

Probably was doctor skill. It wasnt too long ago but Fact is I'm soo flipping busy these days I don't remember what I did and didnt remember using doctor, but very likely that I actually did anyways. Thanks for the potential correction.
