Fallout 1 - Corrupt Save Files!
Anyone else having issues with corrupted save files in Fallout 1?

Let me ellaborate;

All 10 of my save slots have data from my 1st playthrough of the game, these I believe have been synced on Steam's cloud as all the save files on my PC have the same time and date. However, when I tried to load any of these saves I get an application error message stating "The instruction at xxxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxx The memory could not be read from". I then get the "falloutwHR.exe has stopped working" message and the game closes down.

I deleted all 10 game save slots from my PC and started a new game, which I only used 2 save slots, the other 8 were left empty. When I loaded the game today all 10 slots were in use again, 8 of which were the old ones I deleted previously. None of them would load again and with the same error message as before.

Does anybody have this same problem and is there any way to get my save files to work again?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Unfortunately your files are gone. Did you try to save your game during combat? That is a very well known (and very terrible) bug. Honestly, the best way to play this game is using the fallout1 Fixt mod. It's very easy to install and fixes hundreds of bugs as well as adds the half finished content that didn't make the cut, or if you prefer a 100% vanilla run the option for that exists as well the only change is the bug fixes.

Thanks Codester, I finally figured this out.

As a newbie I didn't know Steam synced save files to their cloud so every time I started the game my saves were being overwritten with the ones on Steam's cloud. I didn't save in combat and have no idea how these files got corrupted, to save it happening again this is what I figured:

1. Start the game with the Steam Cloud enabled

2. Delete the SAVEGAME folder on the PC;
These is located in C: > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > Fallout > DATA (note: may be different depending on where you installed the game)

3. Exit the game

4. Finally, disable the Steam Cloud

And that's it, up to now I have had no problems.

As for the Fallout 1 FIXT Mod, I've had a look at this and will install this at some point. I like the idea that you can equip NPC's with better armour and order Dogmeat to stay.

Oh sweet glad you figured it out. Yeah I just finished a run using fixt. The best part is the bug fixes lol.no more Angela from the blades randomly and magically dying in a pool of blood for no reason.

hey, look. the problem of corrupt files starts when you accept new members in your party (Jan, Dog, ect.). It's all about that positions of your friends write in file, which not syncronizing in steam cloud.
So, to restoring your savegame, you have to copy "MAPS" folder from /steam/steamapps/comonfiles/fallout/data on your first device to second. Yepp, they sooo ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up with this.
Sorry for my eng, guys, but i hope, you can understand me.
