cannot give overseer chip

so heres the story. new to the game, made a character. talk with the habitants of the vault, check out the area and whatnot before speaking with the overseer. sends me out for chip so i prepare, suiting up with what i find in the vault. once i leave, i start my journey for this dumb chip. after a couple hours of figuring out where to get rope for the vault, i find that i need somewhere else for chip. i go around for a long while, until i find the necropolis. i shoot a couple ghouls, and leave to find the hub. once in hub, i find those water merchants and tell me to go back to necropolis for the chip i need.

okay, so i walk around in necropolis, finding the sewers that lead me to a water district of the city or whaterver. a couple save scums later, i get this chip.

i return to the vault for my first time, and when talking to others, they seem unhappy and theres blood on the floor near the storage facility. i walk up to the overseer, expeecting to give him the chip, but no dice. he calls me a traitor, and my only option is to defy him. i get shredded.

what the ♥♥♥♥ do i do? what did i do wrong? after looking around, i found that he shreds me because the vault is hostile, but i have no idea what i did wrong. is there any way to rectify this? can i just let the vault die since i really dont care about the people that wanna kill me? ive tried to kill him to see if this fixes it but no result.

Did you return the chip BEFORE time ran out? There is a timer. And, did you send water caravans from the hub to the vault? If you sent water, to increase the amount of time you need to finish the quest, you are labeled a traitor for telling the outside world the location of the vault.

I don't recall that being the case in the original, disk version. What I do recall is that sending the water merchants to your vault alerts The Master and his super mutant army to a supply of untainted, human material.

whatever the reason was, i made a new character and just speed ran it
