Fallout

Can't figure it out?
Welcome to this discussion page. I assume you are here because you are new to the game (or its been a while). In that case, Welcome to Fallout. This is nowhere near the run and gun shooter type theme of Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4 (if you haven't figured it out yet...) but has a significantly better storyline that Fallout 4. This game is a turn based game where you either agro an enemy to you or you attack first. other than this, i would like to explain (to the best of my ability) the way this game works... I WILL TRY TO AVOID SPOILERS.

1. Combat
Combat is basically through turns between you, your companions, and the enemies. your stats are what can make or break your character. you attack by clicking the big box where you put your weapons in to use (of no weapons are equipped in the box, it should say "UNARMED"). you can equip non weapons like Stimpaks in those slots too if in or out of combat.

2.Movement
You move by using the red ring (point and click... like League of Legends)

3.Stats
Your stats basically make you either a genius, a basic intelligence person, or a complete moron.
RECOMENDED TO MAKE YOUR OWN CHARACTER. its more fun. Just like how you would put points into your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. in Fallout 3 or 4, the character has effects by it. Strength affects your melee. Perception affects accuracy. Endurance affects how much HP you have and so on...

In short, your stats can change the game for you so pay attention when putting stats in because changes in your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. also effect your other skills like barter, outdoorsman, energy weapons, unarmed, speech, lockpick, steal, etc.

4. Right clicking

RIGHT CLICKING IS YOUR FRIEND!!!

in and out of combat, the right click can help you in many ways. by right clicking in combat, you can change from attacking an enemy, to move, to observe, and back.
VATS: right click the box with your weapon to change it into an aimed shot (aka. VATS)
right click again on the box to reload your weapon.

Right clicking out of combat can allow you to speak to your companions and other major NPCs in the game.

Holding right click allows you to either talk/ interact , observe, use inventory on, use skilldex on (your stats like steal, first aid, doctor, or lockpick), or to cancel the held right click.

5.Companions
(WARNING: KEEPING IT GENERALIZED) your companions are really stupid. they are not really controlable. they can block doorways, essentially trapping you in the room. and they tend to use melee when they don't want to reload (exception to this is when they are out of ammo). Each companion has a good skill with certain weapons, so if you have a companion, ask them what weapons they are good with.

ALSO: bartering with companions is measured through the object's value and not weight. (a trick to get around this is to use your steal skill to put things in their inventory and to take things you need from them).

6. Talking heads
Many important NPCs have a literal "Talking Head" screen when you interact with them. if you disrespect them, their expression changes, as well as if you are polite to them.

7. Perks
Essentially the same thing as Stats.
Your stats allow you to put more points into your skills and can even make the game way too easy for you. So make sure you have a plan on what type of character you want so you don't waste a perk for a seemingly useless skill for your character.

8.Weapons
there are 4 types of weapons (excluding unarmed)
Small Guns- like pistols, SMGs, shotguns, rifles, and other guns.
Big Guns- like minigun, and rocket launcher
Energy Weapons- like laser pistol, plasma rifles, and gatling laser
Melee- combat knife, sledgehammer, crowbar, and ripper

some melee weapons need energy cells to use so make sure you keep that in mind if you use a ripper.

9.Drugs
you can get easily addicted (even Nuka Cola is addictive). you can cure addiction by walking around the wasteland if you have the patience.

10. Missions
Each place you visit has special missions associated with the town. if you do these missions for the town, the ending for the game changes slightly.

Thats all i can think of for the moment... if i missed anything, or have any questions please comment them and either i or a Fallout Veteran will answer your question to the best of our abilities.

Combat Glitch Exploit: you can activate combat by pressing the A key. walk to a location and when combat ends, spam A to open combat again. since no one has inniciated combat with you, you can move around. If you attack someone while in combat, this exploit will not work. so use this carefully and now you know how to do this exploit. (this is the exploit that speedrunners use when they play this game).

Ah thank you. I just made a thread asking for help as a first time F1 player and well, you've basically answered all my questions. I'll delete it now.
One question though, is the RNG always going to be this unforgiving? I'm at the first rats and I'm standing right next to them but the shots never land. I've decided to avoid them altogether.

The RNG depends on your stats mostly... You can have your Small Guns stat at 100% and up and you use a melee attack which you have at the low 30%. It also depends on your skill with the weapon too

Two issues I've had: I ran out of ammo but the inventory screen still shows X72, so not sure how to reload my clip. Second, I accidentally threw my gun down while trying to reload it and couldn't find it. Looks like I'm going to have to start all the way over. (I only got to the cave exit anyhow.)

You can reload your weapon through the inventory by dragging the ammo to the gun and clicking OK. It should reload. When you drop your weapon, it should be at your feet (either a step away or at the character's feet) if you are playing Fallout 2, you can hold down the SHIFT key to highlight the things you can pick up. But this was not added to Fallout 1.

I really don't get this game

why would this get pinned when it belongs in guides. people are either gonna figure this game out and see what the fuss is about or give up, sorry for being an ass about it but my point stands.
