Game wouldn't launch at all, Windows 10 [FIXED]
Hello Everyone,

I had an issue where my game wouldn't load at all. It would momentarily black screen and quit immediately. I traacked the problem to the ddraw.dll in the game install folder.

The solution is to delete the ddraw.dll file that is in the game folder. If you don't want to delete it, you could rename it instead. I renamed my ddraw_OLD.dll. This way the computer won't use it. The computer will use the current version you have installed for your video card instead.

Good luck,
Mal

If you right click a game in your library and open preferences, there is a tab called local files, in that tab you can open the folder directly.

I bet this solution won't work for EVERYONE because the games so old, I bet there are a ton of different compatibilly issues.

Also, I had to set the falloutHR.exe file to run under Win95 compatability mode.

You don't even need to do this as you can just edit the ddraw.ini and set the graphics mode to 4 (DX9 fullscreen). By default it tries to run in 8bit fullscreen (basic) and windows 10 doesn't display it without Direct Play installed.

This fixes everything so you don't even need to run it in compatability mode.

For whatever reason Bethesda left the ini to not even run in dx9/32bit.

If you want to run it in 8bit just install Direct Play (let's you run old DirectDraw games in it's natural habitat).

For fallout 1 you will need to run falloutHR.exe in compatability mode.

@HitPoint, I'm pretty sure you are thinking of Fallout 2. I just did that fix in ddraw.ini.

Fallout 1 has f1_res.ini with only 3 graphic options. 2 which is DX9 and you can set another, WINDOWED_FULLSCREEN=1, for fullscreen w/ WINDOWED = 1 as well.

Game still loads with a black screen launching from Steam.

Edit: I had to start up in windowed compatability mode outside of Steam. I unchecked "Windowed" and applied and the game errored out. I could only see the top-left corner.

I closed and reopened it, outside of Steam again... and now it works fullscreen. The irony, the ini file is *exactly* the same.

Now I focus on the FalloutLauncher. Even loading that outside of Steam and trying to launch Fallout fails. I enabled Windows 8 compatability mode for it and now Fallout launches w/out issue from Steam. Whatever works I guess.
