What was strange was that it didn't even trigger a dialogue option (picking up every beer can I mean), but something like throwing the stereo into the lake (which is not necessary and not such an obvious option) triggers a couple of dialogues.
Let me answer that with another question: does picking up one piece of trash at the side of the road give you a reward the next time you come home in real life?
Probably not. But it was a concience choice. That's what matters. This game is more an "interactive narrative" than a traditional "game" with scores and leaderboards. It's about the experience and immersion, not so much about getting the highest score.
Though I do agree with you a little bit; I feel Campo Santo could've anticipated completionists like you and me a bit better. Giving us an achievement for actual "achievements" would be nice. Progress based achievements are the lamest thing ever. "You achieved: Absolutely nothing! Woo!". I'm guessing they're used for tracking how much players actually play/finish the game.
Examples of achievements I could see in this game:
1. Picking up every piece of trash at the lake
2. Picking up every beer can in the forest
3. Clearing every path
4. Chopping down all damaged trees
5. Putting the old baseball in the desk drawer
6. Put on your hat every day
7. Finding the hat in the first place
8. Using all of the photos.
9. Bringing the boombox all the way back to your watchtower
10. Putting ropes on all slopes.
11. Reading all cache notes.
12. Eating the candy bar every day it's there.
13. Stomping out every campfire (I'm not sure it's optional, actually..)
14. Putting all your books back on the bookshelf after the break-in.
15. etc.
Those would be nice achievements I'd put some effort into.
1. I'm the Trashman
2. A Raccoon's Hero
3. Keep off the Grass!
4. Sleep all Night, Work all Day
5. Back to Home Plate
6. Wyoming's Gentleman
7. Hats off to You
8. That is a Nice Boulder
9. Ear Protectors
10. Ditch Stairs
11. Peeping Tom
12. It's Got Nuts!
13. Smokey's Ideal
14. Grab a Broom
That was fun naming them =P
