Fullscreen, black, can't play, on OS X / 4k
I'm on a Mac Pro with Retina screens, and when I try to launch the game, I get wind noises (presumably the main menu sounds), but just two completely black screens.

If I hit command-F, the blackness flashes away for just a moment, and I can see a windowed version with a light-blue background (and maybe the logo?) for just a moment before blackness overtakes my screen again; but it doesn't actually *stop* trying to be fullscreen.

Can't play. What can I do?

Similar issue here: late-2013 Mac Pro quad core with D300 video to a Dell U2813HM. I get wind noises and a black screen.
(AMD FirePro D700, i.e. FirePro W9000; 2x Dell P2715Qs @ 3840x2160 … if that's all somehow relevant. :x)

I have the same problem on a mac pro 5,1 with a GTX680 and a P2715Q. If I set my secondary screen (Dell 2412M, 1920x1200) as primary before I launch the game, everything seems to work...

Same problem with late-2013 Mac Pro 3.7 GHz Quad-Core, D700. Start menu is black, can hear wind noise. Clicking around does nothing.

Same rig as Moggis2, black screen with sound. I'm so sick and tired of switching to bootcamp everytime I want to play a game :((

Same problem here: Black screen with sound on my Macbook Pro when I use my external display Dell U2715H (after I unplug it, everything works)

Same problem here, but I've also been having the same problem viewing steam game trailers fullscreen. Both monitors go black, and I hear sound, but nothing but black monitors, and I can't undo the full screen until the trailer finishes.

Update: I have two monitors connected, one is 2560x1440, the other 2048x1152. If I disconnect the smaller monitor I have the same problem, but if I disconnect the larger monitor, then the game plays fine. So, it's very likely due a resolution issue. Unfortunately I dind't have much luck down-resing the larger monitor, but I didn't have a lot of good selections there.

same issue here. Im on a Mac Pro 5,1. Monitor is LG untrawide 3440x1440 plugged into Nvidia GTX Titan X. My boot GPU is a Nvidia GT 120, but it currently has no monitor attached. Processors are dual 6-Core Intel Xeons (12 core) 3.46GHz and I've got 48gb of ram (+ the 12gb on the Titan X).

Getting sound but black screen. When I boot into windows 8.1 the game runs perfectly, its just in OSX that i get the black screen issue.

I've tried disabling steam overlay in-game (as suggested on another thread) but that didn't fix anything.

ok I've just figured out a way of not quite resolving this but at least being able to see the game.

After launching the game you get that black screen, then if you tap command-F you get a flash of the menu screen for a split second before returning to the black screen. By repeatedly hitting command-F i was able to identify where the settings tab was and then with some trial and error (trying to mouse click in that split second of visibility) I managed to get into the graphics settings tab for the game. From here I selected the native resolution for my screen, and then selected accept. Screen will still be black after this. So I quite the game and restarted and now I can see the game propperly... HOWEVER, its in a window, which is irritating but at least I can see the game. Now that I can at least navigate the menu propperly, I've set my resolution in the game to 2560x1080 so that I can see the full game window without any of it being cropped off.

Hope this helps anyone out there having the same issue until they fix the game propper.

I tried that, but after the 10th CMD+F I got a kernel panic restart so don't recommend the option. Doesn't this game save these settings in a file somewhere we can edit it instead? I tried looking in Application Support or even inside the App, but couldn't find anything that resembles a config file...

Must be a way to, unfortunately I'm not that smart when it comes to game tinkering. My solutions is more akin to bludgeoning the game into submission. :\

Hmm, I messed around with the .plist file found in ~/Library/Preferences but changing any of the settings had no effect at all. It's as if the Firewatch app does not even read the pref file...

I have a Mac Pro (2013) and a Dell U2413 (1920x1200 pixel) and the CMD-F solution works only when I disable "DisplayPort 1.2" https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10060635/Firewatch_DP_1.2.jpg in monitor settings.
Then while repeatedly pressing CMD-F I navigate to Settings and change the resolution to 1600x1000.

This issue (black screen on external display) isn't anything the devs of Firewatch can fix. Its actually a problem seemingly all games built with the Unity 3D engine share. Therefore its safe to assume it can only be fixed by the engine makers: Unity Technologies. It is however in many games possible to work around the issue by running the game in windowed or "windowed fullscreen" mode, sadly there is yet no easy way to do that in Firewatch.

Whether or not the root problem is the developers can fix, we've *paid* for this game, and they're obligated to figure out a work-around for us.

Ideally? A launcher-app that lets you set things like this *before* you get into the full Unity interface. Just like XCOM 2, the other game I bought at the same time, has: was able to solve a similar issue simply by launching it a second time and choosing a different resolution. )'=
