Haven't done this in the Free roam mode, as far as I know, certain ones may only be obtained from the main story (near the end in the bunker). There is also a "lending library" cache box that will get more books added to it at a certain point in the story. Not sure what day triggers this, but it's maybe around half way through? (for those who want to know: it's cache box 307).
For the Richard Sturgeon books:
#3 is located in cache box 308, the cover is ripped partially off
#6 is located in cache box 302, by Beartooth Point
#8 is located in a desk drawer in Two Forks Lookout, but it may bug out sometime after the lookout gets vandalized - have had this happen to me on one save game..
#9 is located in the bunker at the end, by the lawn chair
Not sure if you found #10 of the Sturgeon books, it's in a weird spot, and not very easy to pick up as a result (the prompt doesn't always appear).
Also, interested in how many people completed their lookout decorations by putting the Forrest Byrnes cutout back into his "rightful place"?
As far as the pinecones, you can always collect them and pile them up somewhere in the lookout. I like throwing them near the stove, or in the sink, personally.
Hope this helped!
