As far as I am aware, VERY VERY YES this is a real thing. I doubt you can just walk up and get your own fire watch station job as an entry level thing (Meaning without training and/or some kind of certifications like a diploma or something) but yeah, talk to your local park rangers and ask.

Thank you! I was trying to find something like it online in germany, but with no success. But I will ask, thanks!

In Germany there as far as I know no "Firewatcher" jobs since it's not a problem. The closest I think you can come to it is to become a forest guard/Forstbeamter but those don't usually live in the forest.

That's probably close enough. My cousin's husband was a Ranger and they had to live pretty close to the area he was responsible for.

Sorry for the late reply. I am a Forest Service employee IRL. Yes, a Fire Lookout is indeed a real job!
I would have loved doing that for a season or two when I was younger. Now I have a career and a family and all that good stuff, and I'm pretty happy with my life... but a season of almost no people to deal with, and catching up my reading (and portable gaming) would have been lovely. :)

It might be in your country but it is not it every country of course. Like my country and very likely the OP's country (right next to mine) those kinds of jobs do not exist since there is no threat of forest fire.

Big, dense forests which have lots of fire through time often have firewatches, typicallly in Australia

Hey, in Fichtelgebirge Rangers are always welcome! Mostly seasonal jobs. You can give a try at the volunteer fire errr ..... freiwillige Feuerwehr. A lot of the stations are extremly happy when someone comes :) . Firewatching in Germany is highly technical (copters etc) and a lot of work isn`t "watching" but preventing.

So, not exactly as depicted in the game? Interesting. I couldn't pursue the career myself but I am becoming more intrigued by the topic.

In Germany, forests aren`t so huge as in the USA or in Canada. And many of our forests aren`t "wild" in the sense that the trees were planted and hence the ecological niches are artifical sustained. We simply don`t have REAL wild forests anymore. The last Urwald in Europe is in Poland, but it is also on the verge of death. You know, for some ppl economical competition is really important - more important than nature. Real fire watching doesn`t make a sense - the areas are too small and the forests are too "clean".

Very interesting, thanks!
