There is a documented workarround for AMD drivers which OP also kindly has pointed out on PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]but I can't really get it to work even with the documented fix maybe I'm doing something wrong.
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"
OpenGL version string: 4.5 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 21.0.1 - kisak-mesa PPA
Running Ubuntu 20.04 probably just the same as OP.
I have a AMD HD7850 currently and a Ryzen 3700 in my PC. With 32 Gb of RAM so I should fit into min. specs! ^^
I'll try some other games in the meantime. Unfortunate as this is a native Linux port so i figured it might worked from the getgo.
Your GPU is very old. And from what i have found out it only supports OpenGL up to version 4.2. Dead Island needs OpenGL 4.5 to run natively on linux. Since the Radeon HD7850 does also not support Vulkan on linux because it is using the old radeon kernelmodule chances are that you will not be able to enjoy this game via steamplay/proton.
Here are the specs for your GPU:
https://www.gpuzoo.com/GPU-AMD/Radeon_HD_7850.html
That would not work with the configuration descriped above, because there is no Vulkansupport for this specific AMD GPU on linux. Proton needs Vulkan to allow for a good performance.
To apply the fix, open properties and paste the line below in the launch options section.
Thank you so much man I just bought this game and it starts up just fine!
This solves the issue (Nvidia 1060 6GB, Nvidia 550.54.14, Arch).
