This question was asked before and sadly the answer was no then and still is to this day.

I came here to ask the same question, so I bought the first version some years ago, now I want to play it with a friend but since the old version is not available anymore we cannot play together, even if that friend buy that new version.

@Dev: At least you could've done something for owner of the first version, this isn't fair at all, you make us pay twice for the same game...

Except not really because... the other version isn't even available anymore so some years ago for you is probably within the early 2011-2016 range as 2016 is when the defintive edition came out.

Even if it was 2000, we, old Dead Island owner already paid for what was suposed to be a "definitive version" and not some kind of beta that would've been removed and replaced after some years.

I never had any problem with previous version and I didn't asked to the dev to make a new one. It was up to them but then either allow us to play in coop with owner of the new version or allow us a free upgrade to the new one.

So yes, what I said above is totally true, dev make us pay twice if we want to play in coop.

Well the definitive edition uses an entirely different build than what build was used for the original from what I can remember it uses the build used for Riptide as there's a lot of changes from the original down to its very core, an example will be with the throwables in the original took backpack space while in Riptide they were put in an entirely different slot leaving backpack space open.
