Dead Island Definitive Edition

Dead Island Definitive Edition

View Stats:
Original Dead Island is no longer on Steam (you can still buy on Origin)
Edit: It seems Origin still sells the original Dead Island[www.origin.com] and Dead Island Riptide[www.origin.com] but that does mean you need an EA account.

I didn't know about a new version of Dead Island but what I've noticed is the original Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide are no longer on Steam being replaced with the Definitive Edition so you can't buy the original games. I also checked Amazon.com and they don't have the Steam codes for the original games, only the Definitive Editions. I understand the original is made redundant by the new version but it may be annoying if your PC isn't able to play the Definitive Edition but can play the original due to the former's high system requirements, and even worse if players only have the original version since I've read that the original and DE versions are not compatible with each other making it impossible for old players to play with new players. This also becomes an issue for Mac users since the original Dead Island supports OS X/macOS but the Definitive Edition only supports Windows and Linux.

I don't know if the characters/saves from the original Dead Island games are compatible with the Definitive Edition. I probably thinking you can't.

Fortunately, players who own the original Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide can still download and play them but people who don't own the game are outta luck. I'm not sure if co-op will be less useful on the original since players who the DE can't play with players with the original, and you also have to buy the Definitive Edition to play with those new players which may be questionable if you already own the original game.

Actually, I was just looking for the original game. I've already played the pirated version a year or two ago, and I decided to buy it now because of the winter sale. But I can't find it, and this version has too high system requirements for my laptop. I was able to run the original games without a problem, but I can clearly see that my laptop doesn't meet the minimum requirements for this...thing.
If the developers put the original version back on steam before the end of the winter sale then I'll buy it. But if they don't, then I'm going to assume that they don't want my money.

I prefer digital copies when it comes to games.
Physical copy requires shipping fee, a long delivery time depending where you live, and the if the disc gets damaged/displaced then you will need to buy it again.
I know what other options I have, and I don't like them, this is why I'm still complaining.

It appears that Origin still has the original games on sale so anyone who can't play the DE can use Origin to purchase the original games and activate the games on Steam. I've heard keys for the original may still be accepted.

However, you will need an Origin account but it shouldn't be a problem if you played an EA game on PC as you'll have Origin anyway. Unfortantely, you will still need to purchase the DE even if you own the original. Kinda dumb why you don't automatically get the DE whereas BioShock and BioShock 2 gave you the Remastered version for existing owners.

I took my chances on a website that sells keys, and it worked.

If a game sold on Origin isn't made by EA, it'll use a different service such as Steam or Games for Windows Live. Most games such as Saints Row: The Third will usually require Steam but some like Resident Evil 5 will require Games for Windows Live. If you buy Dead Island on Origin, I believe you have to activate the game on Steam so that means you get the Steam version. This means that you don't need to use Origin when playing Dead Island except for downloading and activating it although you can use Steam once the game is activated. However, keep in mind that you will still need the appropriate version of Dead Island (GOTY or DE) or Dead Island Riptide (Original or DE) to play with your friends.
