A new game is always recommended with any major update, especially one that changes as much as this one did.
If you don't start a new game it "may" be playable, but you WILL always have bugs that won't ever be fixed.
If you don't want the new features then opt into the old build in the beta menu in Steam BEFORE you actually load up a save, otherwise that save will be corrupted when you revert back to the old build (and will also require starting a new game to fix.)
You never have to actually "start over" since you can take advantage of blueprinting, console commands, and the item menu. You can literally have everything you had back in a matter of minutes/seconds if you choose to (except for any digging you may have to do.)
None of this stuff is secret.
You don't want to cheat then don't. Plenty of us start over from scratch all the time. If you are having issues with updates because "I don't want to lose all my stuff" then that's a poor excuse is all I'm saying (I'm not saying YOU specifically, just saying in general.)
A new game IS required though either way.
Losing stuff is not a poor excuse. Progress and data loss is for me the most importand thing in a game. I rlly don't care if someone can understand it or not but losing my progress, save etc. is the worst atleast for me. That's why I never play games like Rust where whipes are forced. Still have my Playstation 1 saves which I had worked on several thousands of hours to progress to the point nobody else can or atleast only a few people did. Like Lufia 2 on the SNES. I've managed to reach max lvl before even fighting Gades the 1st time. I never saw something even close to it on YouTube. Ofcourse I will keep my old save of Empyrion but also I can make a new save without any issues..... but it looks like the bug appears even on new character.
Beta
Pre-release
All these will have moments of wipes/ unplayable games after major or even minor updates.
If this is not for you, only purchase final versions of games.
Inventory issues hit almost everyone, if not everyone this major update (9)
