Empyrion's block building system for vessels and structures is definitely better than either SF or NMS though. The sheer variety of what you can do with it staggering, and it's all actually practical enough to use in normal gameplay. Yes, it's very cute in the video how somebody shaped their ship like a mech. I can actually use the combat hover vessels I shaped like mechs to attack POIs.
Doesn't have much of a story, though, not compared to the one embedded in Subnautica or the ones generated by Rimworld. Plenty of Workshop scenario creators have been happy to pick up this slack, however.
Empyrion is a bit close to Subnautica as they are almost same genre, but Subnautica is a story-driven game while Empyrion is more sandbox-y (albeit it has a story, but unfinished and definitely not the strong point).
If you're looking for a real space sim game, I'd suggest you take a look to Elite Dangerous, X4, Star Citizen or Evochron.
Now, how does Empyrion hold up ? Pretty good, I'd say. If you want a space themed survival crafting game, if you like block building a-la Minecraft, if you enjoy the freedom of a sandbox game and if you're not afraid of some jankyness and unpolish, get it.
Also, it is not expensive at all and has frequent sale
Also sandbox and crafting freedom mixed with huge universe is amazing.
SE is good sandbox and has physics but almost no universe.
NMS has big universe but is not a good sandbox.
But what do I know, I've never been a fan of Bethesda's games. I often get bored of the RPG games except for WOW.
I'll probably try Starfield, but as it stands today, I'm not particularly impressed.

But there are many things Starfield simply cannot do that Empyrion can.

If you go into it knowing that this game is primarily composed of Unity asset store assets and coding (which means many of the bugs will never be fixed and don't expect any grand feature updates to ever happen), that modders are the ones that have primarily tried to fix as much as they can through the mod workshop, etc. then it holds up fine.
The vanilla game is a sandbox with a cobbled together story-ish thing, so pretty much like minecraft, if you want a more cohesive story exploration then there are mods that really deliver in that aspect.
A real space simulator is Elite Dangerous. But you cannot build ships and bases in it.
I find Empyrion one of the most underrated space game which is sad because it is one of the best game in the genre.
You can truly flight (and walk) around planets, you have the real "Armstrong moment" that has been so disappointing in both SF and ED. Customization? Not even sure if it is the right word here, just look at the workshop, not only thousands of the 3 categories of vehicles, but also bases, and on top of that, scenarios.
Let me tell you exactly how this game compares with Subnautica. You could create your own "Subnautica style" game in Empyrion, just without the water - as I told at the beginning, physics is not the strong aspect (yet) in Empyrion.
This is an extremely ignorant comment. Whether intentionally or not, It ignores most of the history of the development of this game. I bought the game on 2016. There was no weather, no airtight rooms, no volume, no weight, no factions, no trading, no warping between systems, no freaking galaxy!!!, there were only like 3 or 5 planets.
"Bugs will never be fixed". LMAO!!!!! Just open the updates page and start scrolling down, you'll realize how incredibly far away is this comment from reality.

These are among the best developers I've ever encountered, and they continue to work in the game. I got over 1800 hours, for only 10 bucks (during a sale).
Empyrion comes with a galaxy of 15000 solar systems, all planet regions are consistant in their terrain which is NOT true in Starfield, and that makes a lot of early SF players angry (up to refunding the game methink), the fast travel and tile generation for the terrain don't hold up to the expectations of all the hype, SF is up to get only mixed review results IMO, personally I think SF is nothing much more than Fallout 4 with a space box included.
One game that fares much better but with a more humble environment and ok grafics is the game Spacebourne II which also has role-playing elements, planet descents, free-flight over planet surfaces and FPS gameplay, the only recent game I know which has all this together. Bethesda should have taken a look at this game to get inspired, I have the impression they don't know what other space games are about.

But that's where the comparison ends in favor of EGS, the features working in Starfield are all fletched out very well, surprisingly few bugs only at release (XBox version), and the EGS devs can only dream to similar working features but that should not come to a surprise: the Bethesda team is made of about 500 people working on the game.
Tip:
Buying the digital XBox version of SF allows you to install and play both on XBox and PC, this option is important if you want to mod the game later.
Watch Spanj's first 5 hour stream and he even says this.
I will wait for a big sale before I buy Starfield, if I even bother to buy it. My experience with story driven RPG is one and done, even though there may be lots to do it is the same style missions. Go here fetch that or do this, as I saw in the stream.
I have owned Empyrion since 2016 and still it is of one of my top 3 goto games.
