can i just place them outside or do i need to make proper shelter for them?

They need to be indoors. Changes in temperature at night and caused by weather will kill most crops.

Once upon a distant time (Alpha 3 or 4), you could actually farm outdoors on temperate planets (which was all we had IIRC)... with variable results. That changed years ago. It was never a perfect solution, even back then: weather extremes would kill your crops.

I've had outdoor crops on Omicron for awhile, they've done fine so far. Weather is pretty nice there.
You can do it, but you have to find the most absolutely perfect spot on the perfect planet for it. Not worth the trouble compared to solar powering a bunch of grow lights in simple dedicated farming BA.

Here's your perfect reason to mod a gaia planet with the perfect temperature and absence of weather to make it an agricultural utopia.
In another glacial age, I did some experimentation with ways of dealing with radiation storms on unpowered farms. At the time, I found that certain hull block shapes could create an enclosed room for keeping radiation out while still letting sunlight in.

There was no more real practical use for it at the time than there is now, but these shapes might still perform this same trick.

Wow cool!

I did some testing myself right before 1.9 dropped. Using a paradise planet, on the equator, fully airtight base with O2, I had rooms setup to test if glass walls or roofs would allow plants to grow. Nothing, no type of glass passes the light to grow plants without a grow light.
a hollow cube of glass with a concrete floor wouldn't let plants grow any more than a cube of concrete. I'll give the roof trusses a try and see what they do.

Don't waste your time.
None of the blocks allow sunlight through as far as plants are concerned.

They either need no roof at all so they can get sun, or they need a grow light at the proper distance. There is no in between.

Yeah, proper distance is right, I checked that too, the light doesn't work if its mounted higher or lower than 2 blocks.
OK I've tested it for a couple of days [though it was on a Star Salvage Scenario]

i put growing plots just outside my door in the sunlight & with plants (Plant Fibers, Plant Protein, Pumpkins & Corn)

they all seem to be doing fairly okay no deaths or anything, although that planet very rarely had Radiation storms (where everything was green for a time)

they all seem to be growing & doing their cycle of ripening & re-growing after harvest.

[Edit: Update 1 of the plots were destroyed but it was through the "Evil Zirax Scum" & not the weather]

My outdoor plots on the swamp moon, near the equator, are ok. They stop growing "due to temperature" when it gets too hot, but didn't die.

I might still be set on "easy", though, and I suspect that setting could effect how the scripts work.

Edit: Moon not Planet...

Temperate planets can have radioactive fog roll in. Killed all my plants.

I am curious what difficulty you have set?

Maybe I am just set too easy. I have heard that we can change that when we load a save, but I have not tried it yet.

But then, the moons are Supposed to be easy.
