There's no way that's the finalized way that will stay, it's a placeholder/bug that devs know about, maybe even fixed in alpha (don't know). Your display name should be changeable to whatever you want, but under the hood the game knows your SteamID.
Kind of like having WoW account with female Night Elf Hunter character named "Princess" that your daughter/wife/sister plays, and having male Tauren Shaman named "TheDude" that you yourself play, both on same account.
There might be a way to change it, maybe complete uninstall of game and reinstall (which I agree is ridiculous), I looked through files a little bit, couldn't find where the name is stored (it's not in .ply file).

Take a gander at post #8 by Hummel-o-War (whom I assume is a dev).
I hope you're correct, and they reconsider this for single-player mode at least. Not that I really care a whole lot about changing my name. It just nags the heck out of me that I'm locked into it for no good reason. I can understand the need for some kind of control over multiplayer, where you might want to ban or report a player, but not in SP.
It'd be crazy if they didn't re-consider. As far as control over MP, they should ban SteamID not playername.
I'm guessing it has to do with the way they have their database set up, for now at least, where SteamID translates to Single Name (one to one relationship). Later on they'll implement a data structure where SteamID translates to Multiple Names (one to many relationship). It should be a fairly simple thing to do, though there are other things to consider in that case.
I'm sure they do. SteamID acts as a unique key, since each Steam account can only have one SteamID.
Now if each SteamID can only have a single player name attached to it, then the only purpose to have that kind of setup is to deal with duplicate names playing on same server. Having SteamID as unique key also allows (one to many) Names, it'd be crazy not to take advantage of it at some point.
OR AT THE VERY LEAST allow changing name under same SteamID. That comes with other gameplay issues that they have to work out first. Like for example decide if character stays the same (ex: I start playing on your server, I name myself Times05, I'm level 10, I go back out and change name to Times06, when I log into your server am I still level 10 or am I level 0? How do people recognize me? How do they tell that I'm still the same player, but with changed name?) .
There are plenty of other things to consider, which is probably why they're holding off. But again, it's only a matter of time until they work out all the details and implement re-naming or much more likely having multiple names under same account.
Hoping we can in the future change it because these Devs do seem class at what they do just for something small like this not to be allowed would be sad.
Just to say about the whole Steam_ID/GUID thing, there are games out there (Arma 3 for example) where you can have any names you want (expect ones admin block) and they all link to your Steam ID in the server database, I fail to see any reason why we can use other names just because of the Steam ID...there all linked to the ID so name change shouldn't have any relevance on it.
Last I heard you could change your steam name and that changes your name in Empyrion. Since ypu can only control 1 character, I see no problem here
