Dropship
I apologize up front if I'm necro-posting, but does anyone else want a proper "dropship"? I understand the reasoning behind HVs and SVs docking with CVs and bases. I understand that CVs are meant to stay in space. That would mean SVs or "DVs" Drop Vehicles should be needed to ferry HVs from CVs in space, down to planets and back up again, right? Currently I'm using a Giga (awesome design JRandall) because it's the best "all-in-one" vehicle I've found so far. By adding a DV vehicle, I would be more inclined to build bases and outposts everywhere to act as drop sites. Since there isn't one, I'm forced to just use my Giga as a mobile base since it has to make planet fall anyway.

back in the day you could undock from CV's while in space and drive off and fall all the way to the planet with a hv. it was awesome. Now you can't and I'm not sure why.

Because HV's are ground vessels, not space.

So true. I tried to drive my HV out the hangar and move it onto my orbital base. It was a 1ft gap from CV to base and wouldn't you know it. I farted in the cockpit and the HV hyper-accelerated away into oblivion. Best job I ever had.

I hope to eventually be able to drive HV in space as long as there is gravity. Then if we had some type of drop ship that could shuttle HV to CV, we could then drive the HV off and park it in the ship.

I beleive that the system in place is a simple one, hv for land, heavily armed and sturdy made. Sv for air and space (short hops) not really a combat thing but can be armored pretty well, not especially good weapons though. and CV heavy base/space vehicles, armed and with enough space inside for all the other ships and can land or stay in space, if you want to scout a planet with your sv. if you want to attack a enemy base and use HVs doing it you have to land, thats all there is to it. nothing else can carry hvs so no planetary mining without a CV that will land on each planet. the devs like this idea, and I doubt they are going to change it just to please us, so the sv and hv docking thing has been beaten like a dead horse..lol

Geez, the game is early access and anything is possible. I better not catch you adding salt, ketchup, or anything to your food. When your dinner hits the table, you eat it "as is."

But they are going to change it. It's not impossible to make more docking options like HV to SV to CV to CV. It's just a lot of coding to make it work properly and so it's not going to come for a while. Might be one of the last things we see before Beta. But the Devs do like the idea of more docking options and have intended to work that out for quite some time. We have the current system because it was simple and effective so that the game can be played just fine until they are able to impliment a new system. We don't know what exactly that will look like but we know docking is one of the things they intend to work on.
