Empyrion - Galactic Survival

Empyrion - Galactic Survival

No, it doesn't run with Proton
This is ONLY because of forced EasyAntiCheat. If you run the Empyrion.exe file directly it starts up, music plays, graphics look right, then you get an error because EasyAntiCheat isn't running. Running normally through steam causes the game to insta-crash and you see absolutely nothing, again, due to EAC.

Not bashing the game, I played it back when I had windows and it wasn't that bad. Just making sure you don't buy it hoping proton will run this, because it won't.

What is Proton?
MrBalll Mar 15, 2019 @ 7:32pm
Is that a Linux Distro of sorts? Or maybe a MAC distro?
I'm with Vulcan on what is Proton?
LunaticEdit Mar 15, 2019 @ 7:46pm
Proton allows people on Linux to run Windows only games. This is built into steam. Steam has a whitelist of Proton-compatible games, but a lot of other games run out of the box that are't whitelisted. Some games work, some don't, so I try to give a heads up if its not immediately obvious in the forums.

Ah... I see, it's a Wine-derived effort by Valve that was only released last August. I'm familiar enough with Wine but haven't used Linux in some years, but I'm still surprised that I didn't read anything about Proton! ARSTechnica should have covered it, if nothing else I regularly read.

Any thoughts on this article?

It seems certain that Windows will become entirely a "service" by subscription soon enough, and when that happens I'll dump it and migrate back to a Linux distro (probably some flavor of Mint). It would be nice if truly all of my games can make the leap.

M$ will have a fight on its hand if it tries to make Windows subscription only. They may take our office but... they'll never take our Windows!!!!

They are very much moving in that direction. Have you not noticed that Microsoft is already stating that "Windows is a service" in various desktop notifications? They're trying to brainwash people into accepting it as "normal".

Yes, recently heard about Proton, no idea how it works.
I would imagine, that EAC runs as a wrapper. If it needs to talk to another service, then running under Proton is probably not going to fly if there is any IPC involved. I believe that EGS has a logfile, you want to find out what was happening from the logfile and move on from that point by getting back to the dev team with an actual log of EGS.

Would be great is EAC could be optional....as this is not really a competitive multiplayer i don't understand why i would want an anticheat in the first place tbh O_o

Dont know if log files matters much. As it sounds like EAC is the issue.

We have no controll over that. U have to contact EAC support for that

EAC is optional. U can play without it. Just the majority of the MP server have it switched on

I don't use EAC, because I had an issue with it on my server. Kept booting either my friend or me. So, I disabled it. Problem solved!

Please don't turn this into a MS vs Linux issue guys. I'm just reporting to Linux users that this game doesn't run. To Taelyn, It's optional, but it's not possible to NOT use it on first run, and I've yet to find someone who can easily disable EAC via file or config file changes.

Please don't take my statements the wrong way either. You're not doing anything wrong, and I'm not expecting you to have (or even attempt to come up with) a fix, it's just how it is. Most Linux users duel boot because of these types of issues.

Ah, so having to edit the config to disable EAC was the real barrier.
It's an engineering challenge, i am a MS fanbooi myself, but use 'nix systems in my dayjob and that kind makes me hate both systems. They are also not something that you can actually compare, Windows was not designed to solve anywhere near the same problem 'nix was, there is very little overlap in the designers minds, users have just made the overlap up.

I did some vine testing about 15 years ago, impressed by the detail required to pull off this kind of thing, it's good that people are trying to get this kind of thing running. So quite chuffed that it does work, engineers are pretty cool. Good on you for trying Lunatic, do keep us posted.

Yeah, the Proton system in Steam shows up as an app in the steam folder, and it has a wine prefix, but there's no obvious place to put the config file, and no config file exists, so although adding the setting should be easy, there's no clear path to do so; and it seems others also have failed in the same way.

A LOT of games actually work out of the box with Proton with minimal or no issues whatsoever - namely shadow of war, no man's sky, endless space 2, etc.
