Dedicated Server Stuck At Loading
I setup a new dedicated server yesterday and have not been able to load into the game yet. I have tried from the Host machine, from another machine on the same LAN and a machine on an external connection. In all cases I am able to initiate the connection, but after selecting the planet and starting it just gets stuck at loading. I even let it run for about 12 hours overnight, and was still never able to actually load into the game.

All machines in question have been rebooted, and I have even gone back to the default yaml file and still get the same results. The server shows 1 player online, but never actually loads. When I use another machine on the LAN I can tell the 2 machines are communicating because the host machine is sending data at roughly the same speed as the client machine receives data if I monitor my NIC throughput, but I never get in.

Firewall and Port Forwarding setting should all be set, although it doesn't sound like those are a requirement to access the game over the LAN. The Host machine only has 1 instance of both EmpyrionDedicated and EmpyrionPlayfieldServer running (I read too many intances of one or the other could cause problems).

Both single player and public servers work. I just can't load into my own dedicated server.

I am pretty sure I am out of ideas at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: One thing I did just notice. When connecting to a public server the network speed on my machine is 5-10x what it is when trying to connect to my dedicated server, so even though my host and client are technically talking, they are talking very slowly (and I can still never get in regardless).

Edit2: The first edit might not be relevant. I just remembered I am connected to the server machine via VNC so that likely accounts for the network traffic between the 2. So it connects, asks for the server password, but once it is actually supposed to start loading into the game there is little to no network traffic between the 2 machines.

The 2 Empyrion processes on the server see minimal use whether I am trying to connect or not. 1-2% processor usage, and 85MB of RAM for EmpyrionDedicated, and 560MB of RAM for EmpyrionPlayfieldServer. Neither seems to vary much.

I am currently using a completely default config file. When I couldn't connect to my customized server I tried setting everything back to defaults, but I get the same results. I have also validated the file integrity a few times (easiest way to set the config file back to default if you don't back it up).

Does the modem have a rule in place for Empyrion ?

Yup. Ports 30000-30004 for both TCP and UDP are both forwarded to the host machine, although in theory with a LAN connection it shouldn't matter because I am connecting directly to the local IP of the host machine, not the public IP which would need to be port forwarded. Based on another guide I even forwarded 26900-26904 just in case.

Also for what it's worth, I can telnet into Empyrion using port 30004 (from my client machine). I just can't get the game to load.

I also completely disabled AV and the Firewall on both the server and the client just in case. It's driving me crazy.

How did you solve the problem? My players have the same problem, they load for a very long time. And I myself perfectly connect to my server via LAN IP.

I never did figure it out. I can host Ark, and 7 Days to Die with no problem, but was never able to successfully host an Empyrion server.

I solved the problem of changing the router from DLINK DIR 615 to TP-LINK TL-WR841N!

You might have better luck finding an answer on the developer forum.

No not router. Server is in a data center.

Well thats a bit odd, you should be able to conenct to that easy enough.
And the servers listening ports are open ?

Got it fixed error with config file

If anyone else is having troubles with this, I had the same issue and what fixed it is the following: 1) Enable UAC to notify you when programs are making changes. 2) NOT running steam as administrator. 3) NOT running any of the Empyrion executables as administrator. 4) Launch game through Steam, and when you start hosting a Coop game, Windows should give an alert that the server wants permission to launch. Hoping this might be useful to someone!

Found this thread in 2024 because I was having the same problem with my local dedicated server. I was able to eventually solve it by turning easy anti cheat to false in the yaml config file for the server. It was happening because I didn't have EAC installed on the client and trying to direct connect to IP apparently doesn't throw you the error you see if you try to connect from the server browser. Installing EAC for Empyrion didn't help either, that actually removed the multiplayer selection completely from the game for me, so I couldn't even attempt to connect. But turning it off on the client and on the server, I'm able to connect to my own LAN dedicated server now.
