If you're playing with mass/volume enabled, you can also place container extenders directly touching it (or touching other extenders) to increase the storage space available. If you're playing without mass/volume (the default setting) then you don't need to do this.
Ore mined with the laser will automatically go into the container controller. The mining laser by default is only usable in space for mining asteroids though, not on planets.
Constructors can only be connected to one container for input, and one container for output.
Extenders simply increase the volume of the container controller they are placed next to. They don't connect different containers together. Think of it like creating a modular cargo bay, you need 1 container controller, and 0-39 container extenders placed directly next to said controller or other extenders. Each one adds 8,000 volume to the container controller.
