Walking on moving objects
WHEN/ARE they going to add the ability to walk around ships whilst moving!?!? Its been years and tons of unity games already have this basic feature implemented, I can not even keep track of the amount of times my crew mates get ping ponged outside the ship because I had the audacity to try to strafe our ship few meters to the left to dock with a station.

From what Ive seen yes this is planned... but they just keep saying itll be a while. Something to do with rewriting how all of the collider systems work

Name one.

I can't even think of a non-unity game where this works.

The caveat being of course that we are talking about games where the ship and player exist as fully simulated 3d objects moving on a 3d playset.. of course if you "enter hyperspace" or something and transform the ship into a static map / playset of its own, you can do it trivially.

But there are basically zero games that let you be a 3d object moving on another 3d object in 3d space.

Star Citizen was designed from the ground up to allow you to do exactly this, and players STILL glitch through moving ships.

Some games like X4 and Warframe can do it, but only because the ship is a fixed and pre-defined space. No game that I know of allows you to walk around freely while it's in motion yet also lets you customize the full shape of the ship.

Okay.. I'm not going to lie, I'm going to step on everyone's toes with this... When is it going to happen in THIS game? Easy.. It isnt. The engine is just a bad engine when it comes to physics like that. The most complex game made with Unity is probably Rust. Now.. that being said.. There ARE several games where this works BUT they all have engines built specifically for physics capabilities to have objects move appropriately or tricks to anchor with. What game does it with the ability to design your own ships? Be a 3D object, moving on a 3D object while in 3D space? Umm... Come on now.. Space Engineers... I think they did it the best out of everyone and I don't know how everyone keeps over looking it but.. I digress. This is only aimed at games that are multiplayer so I'm not going to his on instanced with virtuals like in the X series.

Custom Ships / Vehicles w/ movement :
Space Engineers
StarMade
Roblox
Starship Evo
Hellion (abandoned)
Shores of Hazeron
Raft

Fixed Ships / Vehicles w/ movement :
Star Wars Galaxies
Star Citizen
Guns of Icarus
Worlds Adrift
Ascent: Infinite Realm

I'm sure the list continues over the years. At the end of the day, it isn't a matter of is it something that has happened in a game before? It is a limitation of the engine the game was built with from a small indie developer. Designing their own engine was more than likely improbably and it takes a lot to learn new engines line Unreal or Havok. Unity is a decent engine for small developers, just not as complex as what you are asking. Give them some credit though, they have done a fantastic job with the tools they were given.

I have yet find find a reason to move on a moving ship unless i want to pick plants everything is available by pressing F4, what am i missing?
if i could have the plant plots put into the logistics menu i would probably never leave my seat.

Empyrion uses the same engine as Starship Evo, Raft, Guns of Icarus, and Worlds Adrift. Also, Airmen.

Dont know the other games.
In raft the raft is the center of the universe.
So the ship/raft doesnt move, its the world that move
(a fixed in high and angle world with 400m renderdistance that start to become laggy when the raft is arround 50x50x10 Blocks large)

Unity is capable of it, but no engine does this perfectly not even SE.

Every few weeks like clockwork someone starts this thread up. People seem to forget one thing that makes EGS different from any other game including Space Engineers. EGS has a large amount of calculations going on at any one time. All that digging of huge holes then going back over that area, that has to be calculated. Devs tried to deal with that but community did not want it (minority anyhow). I am not a blind supporter of this game check my posts, I will speak up though for things like this as it has been explained so many times in 5 years. Also if you read the message from Aug 2020 you would not it is highly unlikely we will ever walk on moving ships. That would be a major change to the game and they said those are over. The backlash from the forced wipe of all game data would kill their game for sure. SE is built on an inhouse game engine designed to do what it does. EGS works off of Unity so they are subject to the limits of Unity. Limits that both EGS and 7D2D both have to deal with. StarMade can not be compared to EGS because it is just all blocks, where EGS gives the graphical look of shapes even if everything is blocks. Last I played StarMade it ran like crap and to me was crap. Hellion also another case, while you were inside you could not see outside could you? Also the speed that EGS sees was not in Hellion. Then there is the fact that devs walked away from it seeing as they could not complete the game.

Guys we all want the same thing for EGS but the end of the day walking on a moving vehicle of any kind is very hard. Every run on a treadmill? Pretty much the same concept but where as one person can run on a treadmill for hours another could fall on their face and be seriously hurt. So where say my PC may run the game with moving on a ship that is moving out there somewhere is someone with a less powerful PC that would not handle it. So devs have to consider that over the demand for such a feature. Besides a better AI system that is more of a challenge would be a lot more popular considering the huge PVE/SP population in this game. Would rather see that Star Destroyer size CV need a AI crew over being able to walk around. It is not like you are forced to spend a lot of time traveling like in SE where it is 10 minutes to another planet with a Speed Mod.
piddlefoot Jan 21, 2021 @ 7:29am
In SE whenever I set the ship to roll at 10/m/s so I could walk around doing stuff inside, I almost always missed my target anyway, fly right on by LOL !
Cos you need to be able to see where your going when you get close to target or destination, so in SE, and I have around 3000 hours in that also, I never really found it to be much use anyway, it is ok for keeping a ship from being a static target but thats really all I found it useful for, and being SE was SOOOO limited with its AI that hunts you, very little reason to even need to use it in that manner, so how much use it would be in this game, to me, probably not much, to others I dont know.

In Space Engineers it can be good to have one player frantically running around repairing damage while the other player flies the ship, just don't let them turn on their jetpack or they can end up smeared across the hull. I've had Empyrion moments where an emergency damage team would be helpful during a fight.
BGratz Jan 21, 2021 @ 12:09pm
For me there is zero need for such nonsense, it even contfratdicts what they really should do.

And thats creating THIS FEELING
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOyfyFUqPzg

Not Bumpercars in space with Dancing for the stars during a high g acceleration.

Besides this except the few times you travelk to a Asteroid at the end of a system you hardly ever have time to leave your seat. 5 Minutes after this would be implemented the first thread would be "We need a alarm system, lost my ship to a dreadnought that sneaked inmto me"
(after the player flow direct into it during the player picked some flowers)

its seems a very simple concept to me to fix the players movement to the ships plane rather than the spacial plane.

And seems like a given at that.
