Report a translation problem
Within a certain distance pinging the detector will put it on your map temporarily and give you vague idea of what it is (deposit, point of interest, etc).
You will need to get fairly close (200m - further if you are in a vehicle) to have the point permanently marked on your map and know exactly what it is (copper, iron, wreckage, etc) at which time I believe the red portion will come off since you know what it is already.
Oh, you're right. I was sure I remembered being able to find things without a detector. I guess with the new ping mechanic I forgot how it was before.
