What Are Aluminum and Platinum For?
As far as I can tell, neither of them are used in the construction of anything, aside from their own refined forms.

Are they just early game inserts for features that are going to be introduced in future updates?

Your assumptions are correct. Supposedly we will get uses for these mats in the future. As for now, some traders will buy the ingots and bars, but from what I seen, it is a rarity. For now, I just pass these asteroids or deposits up.

The only thing I have found Platinum for is the 1 bar you need to get the ]root beer recipe if you are neutral with the pirates . I buy at least one from the Polaris vender.

I thought aluminum powder was needed for something. Cannot remember definitely though.

And platinum is needed for a quest as already stated.

Far from it dude !
Maybe we will see a complete tech tree rework with the introduction of new tech lines for alloy and plat, and maybe even some others.

It could sure use a new way to level up so to speak, just unlocking points in a tech tree doesnt feel very immersive.
Something more like how subnautica handle finding new tech and what not would suit this game so perfect, scan it for its tech.
Scan item, your ipad updates with a new blueprint, pretty simple and very immersive stuff.

Platinum is not only used for jewelry, which would sell in stations...but also for very high end electronics and even researching power supplies like reactors. So this might just pop up some day, you never know. (Reactors MK 3?) (Warp Drive Boosters?)

Dude that's exactly my thoughts! Is it still possible though? I thought with 1.0 basic consepts were set in stone

Totally possible, its not a core component of the game, its not part of the backend of files or folders that the game runs through.
Its just a feature like many others , easily changed, a lot of work to do it, but its not a hard thing, its just swapping out some files for new ones basically, and thats because the core backbone of the game is done and set in stone.

But there has been chat about upgrading the tech tree for some time, not sure on the progress of that proposal.

That would be awesome.

A couple of higher tiers for everything would get us a little more end game.
