How is promethium mined?
Hi guys. Just started the game. Can't figure out how to mine promethium.

I've found the stuff and mined all around it... but whenever I touch the deposit itself, it poofs and is gone. Doesn't drop any promethium. I've done it with a few nuggets, and now the deposit on the map shows 80%... Am I approaching it with the wrong tool? I'm using the first drill, but I've tried a few other things and nothing seems to work.

While nugget "puff" then promethium ore added to your inventory.

You mine it with the drill. Make sure you keep the drill in "resource harvest" mode (the same mode you use to dig with). It should appear in your inventory automatically.

um, you need your drill set to Ground Drilling in order to mine any of the SSOR resource nodes. not sure what you are referring to as "Resource Harvesting" as the only other option for mining is Rock Drill, which pertains to the surface ore rocks you will find scattered across the planet.

@OP, i suggest checking your inventory when you've made a node go "poof" as you put it. you should be getting anywhere from 10-80 (could be wrong on that range, but its the range i've taken note of when i remember to look at the yield) ore from one SSOR.

If your inventory is full, ore will go 'poof' and you get nothing. There has to be a place to put the ore in your inventory.

Yup I didn't have the names of the drilling modes in front of me.

My question is, just how rare is this stuff? I have explored extensively on my stater world, from the northen ice feild down to the soutn region and I have found exactly one rock on the bottom of a lake.
I have found plenty of the other ores but this one is almost non-existant. Is this normal?

Promethium rocks can be found rarely underwater and sometimes in the radiated biomes.

you find the medium sized deposits in the radiated biomes, anywhere else you find them on the starter planet will be either small or very small. even those deposits are worth mining early on, promethium ore yeilds 10 pellets per ore so its easy to amass quite a bit early on. then you won't need to worry about fuel once you get a ride.

i do suggest starting the Robinson Protocol if you haven't already, it will lead you through areas that will have all the basic ores you need plus you'll end up finding promethium here and there along the way. you'll most likely have your Radar Station located in a radiated biome so you'll know where to go at that point :)

adding to that, the radiated biome is a great place to farm up cobalt early on as well, you'll find it as surface ores here and there, if you're lucky you will get more than one large radiated biome.

Look at the map of the planet. On the right there is a window listing all the ore available on the planet.

Every start I've had, Easy or Hard, there have been three deposits of Promethium. All small or very small and always near Zirax outposts making them vey dangerous to mine.
Best bet for early fuel is Bio Fuel. Get an HV with a harvester and collect wood. By lvl 5 I usually have 10 Protable constructors built and I keep them stocked with wood all the time.
To get al ittle Promethium so you can power your T2 Drill, getting the Promethium rocks in the radiated zones is your best bet. Again, using an HV with a Minigun for this is really helpfull. Radiated areas are full of alien bugs and alien assasins. Very deadly if you are on foot.
