@OP, i suggest checking your inventory when you've made a node go "poof" as you put it. you should be getting anywhere from 10-80 (could be wrong on that range, but its the range i've taken note of when i remember to look at the yield) ore from one SSOR.
Yup I didn't have the names of the drilling modes in front of me.
I have found plenty of the other ores but this one is almost non-existant. Is this normal?
Promethium rocks can be found rarely underwater and sometimes in the radiated biomes.
Promethium ore can be rarely found in mountains and often in radiated biomes.
i do suggest starting the Robinson Protocol if you haven't already, it will lead you through areas that will have all the basic ores you need plus you'll end up finding promethium here and there along the way. you'll most likely have your Radar Station located in a radiated biome so you'll know where to go at that point :)
adding to that, the radiated biome is a great place to farm up cobalt early on as well, you'll find it as surface ores here and there, if you're lucky you will get more than one large radiated biome.
Best bet for early fuel is Bio Fuel. Get an HV with a harvester and collect wood. By lvl 5 I usually have 10 Protable constructors built and I keep them stocked with wood all the time.
To get al ittle Promethium so you can power your T2 Drill, getting the Promethium rocks in the radiated zones is your best bet. Again, using an HV with a Minigun for this is really helpfull. Radiated areas are full of alien bugs and alien assasins. Very deadly if you are on foot.
